Felix Sturm has just retained the WBA MW world title and Gennady Golovkin recently picked up the interim version of the belt, and unless politics say otherwise, this "unification" could happen pretty soon. Sturm is of course a 3-time world champion with a daylight robbery loss to Oscar DLH and TKO loss to Javier Castillejo (avanged), and recently beat Giovanni Lorenzo after having settled a legal battle with former stable Universum Box-Promotion (promotes himself now). Golovkin, also fighting to get away from Universum (any update on that one?) was a tremendeaus amateur knocking out Bute and beating Dirrell, Despaigne and Andy Lee, picking up a world championship gold and an Olympic silver before turning pro. He won the interim WBA belt in style, stopping the overmatched Milton Nunez in just 58 seconds, and looked damn good doing it. He's now ready to go "official" vs. Felix.

Sturm at 31 is about at his peak and brings tons of more experience, a very nice jab and tight defense to the table while Golovkin has damn good natural abilities, a wide skill arsenal, excellent speed and timing and crisp short hooks. This is a pretty nice MW match-up and hopefully will happen soon. If it does, who do you prefer?

Sturm is "Super-Champion" which means he has to defend his belt once a year. He probably has much time to face Golovkin.

Golovkin´s style is poison for Sturm I think. But Golovkin never faced someone of Sturm´s calibre. Sturm also is faster, a good ring general and has much more experience. I don´t have a clear cut opinion yet.

    Golovkin is the goods though.

Golovkin won it... think Sturm has 3 years (or so) to make a mandatory defense (against regular champion). A fight against Golovkin is not planned, I'm sure... too unknown and too good.

Golovkin has to face Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam next, which is probably a better fight than Golovkin-Sturm anyway. I do think Golovkin eventually beats Sturm though.

JMM vs John was not for the super belt afair
So it happens around once a decade
    Thanks for clearing this up:D

Sturm actually was very good but he isnt the same anymore since he got stopped. Though he had a bit of a revival in the fight with Sylvester who he took apart so i wouldnt write him off for now.
But with Sturm nomore using his legs and his holey peek a boo style defense I think hes quite handmade for Golovkin to outbrawl and stop him.

Yeap, his double guard defence is not what it used to be. A bit porous for my taste... but, he employed different strategies in his recent fights. Much more in you face than previously which may explain why he gets tagged more often. It is possible that he would revert to fighting from distance against Golovkin or other big punchers.

I read an article sometime back about Sturm, Golovkin, and Universum. According to that article Sturm and Golovkin have a gentlman's agreement not to fight until both are clear of Universum. Sturm obviously settled his case. Golovkin is still working on his. It's a wait a see situation.
