Roy Jones ready to challenge Calzaghe

    ROY Jones Jr is willing to come to Britain to fight Joe Calzaghe – but first the four-weight world champion has to see off another ageing star, Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad.

    Jones faces the Puerto Rican at Madison Square Garden on January 19, three days after his 39th birthday. The pair will meet at a catchweight of 170lb, just two pounds over the super-middle limit.

    And Roy – despite having never boxed professionally outside the US – insists he would cross the Atlantic to meet Wales’ record-breaking WBO super-middle king on his own patch, unlike reluctant traveller Bernard Hopkins.

    “I like to fight the best,” says Jones. “From what I see, they think Joe Calzaghe is really good. After Tito, my magnet is going to be putting me towards that direction.

    “I’ll go to England. They don’t have to worry about where I come. They make it right and I’ll go to England.”

    Presumably, the geographically challenged Floridian includes Wales in that statement and, as with Hopkins or any other American, the money available would be greater if the fight was staged at a packed Millennium Stadium.

    Hopkins – beaten by Jones back in 1993 – is demanding home advantage to face Calzaghe and has talked of a clash at Yankee Stadium in July, a date which promoter Frank Warren has already dismissed as too late in what Joe intends will be his last year in the ring.

    Perhaps Roy would be ready to come to Cardiff in the spring. But he first has to beat Trinidad, himself a three-weight titleholder.

    Tito, who will be 35 by then, has never weighed more than middleweight, while Jones famously became the first former middleweight king to win a heavyweight crown when he outscored WBA champion John Ruiz in 2003, although Roy scaled well inside the cruiser limit.

    he's like a boil on your arse is Roy Jones these days, he's just irritating as **** and won't go away.
    His punch resistance has totally gone and he will be knocked out by Trinidad IMO.

    It would be quite a spectacle. Roy to pull of an epic upset! It would eclipse Ali/ Foreman if he did.

    Theres nothing tarnished about his legacy.His already a lock for the HOF and already an ATG.The only problem is his running on fumes and seen much better days.Roy is only fighting for his pride at the moment.That is all he has left.

    Jones is tryin to steal that fight away from Bernard for ****in jealousy and Joe may well take it to get another 60 thousand at the Millenium and millions safe in the bank... What a shame! I hope Tito really gets in the way of this...

    Calzaghe thought Jones was "something else" in his prime!

    Calzaghe doesn't hit as hard as the 175lbs. Roy would have a slim chance.

    Roy has no chance his days as en elite are long gone ..... ever since he ran for 12 rounds against tarver in their 3rd fight he has been finished he has no confidence and he's just to old to mount any kind of meaningful victory

    Have you followed Hopkins career ? Hopkins has pretty much followed in Roy's footsteps even hiring the same nuetritionist for his fight w/Tarver that Roy used for Ruiz !! Lets not forget that he too wanted to go to heavy just like Roy !

    Even if he has so much faded I think Jones has a better chance against Calzaghe than Hopkins. It would also give a more entertaining fight. Even with his dirty tactics and his experience Hopkins wouldn't win : Calzaghe has also much experience. Calzaghe's superior workrate would be enough to secure the decision. RJJ was not so bad against Hanshaw and from times to times he showed he has still some skills to trouble Calzaghe imo.

    Hopefully this will be the incentive that Hopkins needs to get this fight made and not make ridiculous demands as far as as the purse split is concerned.

    Jones hands speed is still decent enough to macth Calzaghe ..The main concern would be Joe's work rate ..Roy can't lay on the ropes against a fighter of Calzaghe's class and wrokrate !
