2ironmt, You did a fantastic job of dodging and dancing around my questions with diversions and tangents.

This is how you had replied to one of my previous posts. Where did you get this notion of , “The UFC just had to sign… JT”? I never said that Dana had to do anything. You’re the one imagining these things.

    You:
The question is not one of profit. The question is whether Dana actually paid Toney to either fight or denigrate MMA with needless trash talk. If you remember there was a whole dispute about how much money Fedor was actually offered to fight in the UFC. Mayweather refused to fight in the UFC because he too said that the pay offered wasn’t enough. That’s why money was such an issue. If Dana really wanted to hype an MMA/boxing debacle he could’ve done it a long time ago.

Below you claimed that Dana’s divine plan to make the UFC look good by destroying an inexperienced/out-of-shape James Toney worked out perfectly.

    You:
If that was part of his plan. Why did he ignore Toney for so long? It makes no sense.

    You:
These statements are contradictory. If everyone (both fans of boxing and MMA alike) knew that Toney would lose because of his poor physical conditioning and lack of required training then how would Couture’s victory validate the UFC exactly? It turned out to be a boring garbage fight as everyone had expected. Your own assertions demonstrate the sheer futility of this fight as entertainment/hype and lend further credence to my theory that it was a put-up-or-shut-up offer as Dana has said himself.

It’s implicit in your statements. You keep stating that this was all part of Dana’s plan to validate the UFC. That this is what he had always wanted and it played out perfectly, in your own words as I‘ve quoted them. My point is, how could Dana have forced Toney in to wanting this fight in the first place? And why did he avoid him for so long if he truly wanted Toney as a sacrificial lamb to make his organization look better? I understand that Dana eventually wanted the fight. As I’ve explained before, he caved in to Toney’s incessant harassment and trash talk. I’m sure that Dana’s own fighter’s prompted him to give them an opportunity to shut Toney up as well. And if Dana hadn’t offered him enough money, Toney would’ve skated free and claimed that the UFC wasn’t serious about a fight. Then boxing would have the bragging rights.

In your own words, Toney was and is irrelevant. So how does that fit in to your master plan theory that this fight was supposed to validate the UFC somehow? This is YOUR theory, not mine. I understand that the fight was a joke as most people do. Dana has admitted that himself. So your theory makes no sense. How does a meaningless fight generate hype and validation for MMA/UFC? It’s clear to me that as the climate between boxing & MMA became increasingly volatile, Dana finally decided to put the trash talk to rest by offering Toney the fight that he wanted. Nothing more, nothing less.

You can compare them to a certain degree seeing as how they’re both combat sports. Any organization/sport that employs a person through the exchange of money is in effect controlling them to a certain extent. They are the ones who make the rules. Boxing and MMA are no different in that respect. Whoever is paying a boxer to represent their sport is also exerting some degree of influence over them. It makes no rational sense to promote your financial interests by bashing them. This is so 5th grade common sense economics. However, I was only comparing the self-serving tactics of James Toney. You didn’t answer my question either.

You keep missing the point. Dana White is not some omnipotent God who can force any boxer to fight in the MMA. They have to want to do it. That was why I had previously asked the question about how Dana could have coerced Toney to make the offer to fight in the UFC. Toney is the one who made the offer so he got the fight. You make it sound as if Dana can simply issue a demand and bring the best representation of boxing (in your mind) in to the UFC.

Toney could have gotten in to better shape if he wanted to take this fight seriously. That was his choice. It was also his choice to fight in the UFC. It’s not Dana’s fault that a fitter/more relevant and/or able boxer didn’t make a similar offer. Blame Toney for begging for this fight and being fat if you feel that he didn’t belong there. Blame other boxers for not making a similar offer if you feel that there were better options available. Dana can’t command every boxer to do as he pleases. It’s not his job to beg and plead for top-ranked boxers to fight for him. Toney was the one who was begging.

The UFC didn’t force Toney to do anything. Toney is what the boxing community had offered the UFC. Dana has no control over who would make such an offer. You have repeated over and over again that no one expected Toney to win this fight because he was out-of-shape, irrelevant, inexperienced in MMA etc. Then you still expect me to believe that this was all a part of Dana’s master plan to validate the UFC with a total throw away fight which no one was buying in to anyway? And he avoided him for years so he couldn’t have wanted it that badly anyway. I believe that fight happened for one reason and that was the fact that Couture wanted it seeing as how he was the one who was called out by Toney. Dana gave Toney the opportunity to put up or shut up. Plan and simple.
