Yes, if Vitali would have been allowed to continue, Peter would have been knocked out in that fight, too. He was severly hurt in round eight, and he was on his way to the canvas, without question, when Peter quit. And Peter knew it.

Also, Vitali did it, cold, after four years of not being in the ring.

What round you thought Peter won vs Vitali? If lets say Peter won 1 round, he still got his ass whooped and Vitali made Peter quit. And this was Vitali first fight back after a 4 year retirement.

Vitali's performance was incredible in the best comeback victory ever.

Wladimir was very good in the Peter rematch but he would have to be considered sloppy when compared with Vitali's performance in 2008 when he dominated Sam Peter in the middle of the ring for the whole 8 rounds with Peter rarely getting close and constantly eating leather from the outside. A masterful comeback.

I agree with the not competing against the elites...if by elites you mean the Klitschos. Even against Chambers he only lost by majority decision. But no, quitting with the corner's consent is not nearly as definitive as getting ko'ed. Peter could have survived to a decision against Vitali. No way was he making it to the end against Wlad. From the 5th round on he was a dead man walking. At no time during the Vitali fight was he wobbled or finished.

I understand that it was he first fight back. But he didn't win every round on the cards. Wlad did.

Dude he quit vs Vitali in which should tell you he was very close of being stopped lol. Vitali beat up Peter like the way Calzaghe did to Lacy. Peter look like a dead man from the 4th or 5th round vs Vitali. And lets not forget this was Vitali first fight back after a 4 year retirement.

Vitali's. He absolutely toyed with him like he didn't want to hurt him too much. No clinching, no holding, just toying till he quit beaten up to a bloody pulp. And that's coming back straight from retirement, being 37, against a champion, one of the best, not damaged yet, heavys at the moment.

    Vitali>>>Wlad

I strongly feel Vitali. He was more effective. Coldly effective like always. He was the first to stop Peter and typically your punch resistance gets lower and lower with those kinds of losses. He was 37/38 years old, coming out of retirement, first fight back, with Peter being the WBC champion. Yes, Peter was over his best weight but it doesn't much change Peter's style which is one that isn't athletically based to begin with and not dependent so much on weight because of it. Wlad just stopped the version that had been lopsidedly beaten up by Vitali.

We're not forgetting the fact that it was Vitali's first fight back...But that wasn't the question, was it? Wlad clearly ko'ed Peter and had him badly hurt several times....Vitali won a war or attrition. It was an impressive comeback fight. But take out hte comeback and everything else. It was no where near as impressive as what Wlad did tonight. Wlad was never hurt, never wobbled, and he clearly Ko'ed Peter. Really, what is the argument here. One guy ko's another fighter and the other forces him to retire. Both are impressive, but physically stopping a fighter will always be more impressive than forcing his corner to stop it. The Peter corner was talking about stopping the fight in round 7! But Peter wanted to continue because this is probably his last shot.

Put it this way: on which night would you have rather been Sam Peter?

Anyone with any sense would have to say they'd have preferred to be in his shoes back in 2008.

I'm curious about that too, because I don't remember a single round that was even close.

Then you haven't watched the fight...again. Because Peter was fairly effective with body shots in the middle rounds of the Vitali fight. You could have given him round 5 or 6 or one of the middle rounds. In this bout there was no round that was even remotely close.
