I'll address some of the more discussed alleged dives here on ESB. Green vs. Briggs is a blatant dive on Briggs' part and nobody thinks otherwise. I am of the opinion that Green may well have been in on it. His legitimate fury with Briggs was probably for camping it up and ruining the deal, rather than for Briggs refusing to man up as he played it off. Williams vs. Cintron is a very tough call. My interpretation is that his momentum did take him out of the ring without any "jumping" on his part, but that he did milk his time on the floor and wait until they had called the fight off to pretend to protest that he wanted to continue. So he's a ***** but didn't outright take a literal dive. Ali vs. Liston II was a legitimate knockout victory. I've discussed this ad nauseum in the Classic forum. Liston may have mentally given up after the knockdown - but it was a legitimate knockdown from an unexpected counter right hand that robbed Liston of his equlibrium, and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. The film speaks for itself.
DLH-Hopkins. But perhaps it was the BEST dive in history, cause Oscar actually fooled the whole world into believing the shot was legit.
uhm, there was a mic in De La Hoya's shorts. You think he woulda faked all this?; [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeRXCyzCX-U[/ame]
I'm going to get a lot of flak for this one, but I think it was a legitimate dive. Look at the wink and the expression after he goes down. I think he honestly wasn't hurt by the body shot either. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFdeRm_qmDs[/ame]
But fa real though.... Hopkins & Hoya pulled the biggest scam in history that night. For ONE.... in between rounds 8 and 9 you can hear Hop tell Brother Nazim "This is my round..... this is my round!" with a **** eating grin on his face like he knew what was going down. TWO.... just seconds before the shot landed you can blatantly hearing Brother Nazim saying "Body shot! The body shot!" THIRDLY..... Oscar wiggled and rolled on the canvas like he was ****in Daniel Day Lewis trying to win an Academy Award. Contrast that to REAL body KO's like Jones-Hill, and Gatti-Dorin where the guys are paralyzed on the canvas in obvious pain. And then the FINAL touch..... a few weeks later the two are in business together. But nooooo..... nobody finds any of this even a LIL bit suspicious? Only one word ever comes to mind when I think of Hopkins-DLH...... F I X.
You should get flack for this.... its a **** answer. Lots of fighters wink after legit KD's. Its a sign to signal to the corner, fans, and opponent that they're not hurt, even though they are. And given Bute's track record of stopping guys with body shots, I dunno how you coulda said Librado faked it. Totally NOT a dive! Just two very well timed and placed left hands by Bute.
