It is only in hindsight that we can conclude that Cotto was a tougher opponent than Clottey. At the time, many thought that Clottey won over Cotto. So, it would have been prescient of Pac and Roach to have selected Cotto for the catchweight and not Clottey. Also, remember when people were saying after DLH that we still didn't really know how well Pac can take a full welterweight's punch? The way I saw it, Cotto was the 'tune-up' fight for the welterweight division, not in the sense of fighting a lower quality of opposition but in terms of testing the waters. Hence, the catchweight. Cotto just happened to be Top Rank's preferred opponent for Pac at the time. Cotto also happened to have a belt at 147, and it was just an after-thought (by Arum and the WBO) that the bout became a title fight.
Why is it so hard to believe that a fighter will select the toughest possible opponents simply because he wants to challenge himself? Not all boxers are like Floyd.
Yup, that why there are plenty of 7-division titleholders around. HGH is too easy to get nowadays. :hi:
I fully agree. You have to wonder at what point can Pac keep on coming up in weight and still emerge victorious. But this is why I'm a fan. Nothing beats the thrill of a fight in which your favorite boxer stands a good chance of losing.
in a post-fight interview, he did... or possibly a Cotto fight (a spring plan B Mayweather fight) after Cotto gets another win under his belt for legitimacy... easy money for Arum
i believe he was testing the waters. hehe doesnt matter. Pac wouldve ate cotto alive even at 154. Props to cotto for not getting layed out cold.
