2nd Ali-Spinks fight. i was 7 and my old man went nuts when ali won. He actually kept the newspaper clippings of it. I remember the 1st fight i was allowed to stay up and watch was holmes-cooney. The tv channel showed the deer-hunter movie before hand and it seemed like an eternity waiting til the 4am (i think) fight. I also kinda remember the tv channel kinda f*****g up the movie and restarting it from the beginning. Long long night that was.
Archie Moore/Yvon Durelle 1 I remember that we just got a TV and the fight was on. My father had to hold the antenna in the other room so we could see the picture. That was the 1st boxing match I ever saw and it may well have been the best ever. It was later voted the fight of the decade (1950's)
My dad took me to the old Garden in 46 to see Robinson against Tommy Bell for the vacant welter title.
I remember seeing Graziano and Janiro going to a draw. Also Murphy and Bucceroni. Those might not be the first fights I saw on TV but they are about the first I remember.
Christ!! Im so jealous of you older guys having lived thru such cool **** like that. To be able to say you saw Sugar Ray Robinson live at the garden!!!:happy
hahaha If I was Sugar I would've been real glad you were there - at the end of the fight I'd have been going "where's John??...John!!!!.......Joooooohhhhhhn!!!!!! Joooooohhhhnnn!!!!!!!" :| a la Rocky Balboa's "adriaaaaaannn!!!!!! Adriaaaaaaaaann!!!" :| You are one lucky sod though John for sure :good
That's EXACTLY what happened, R, but they never mentioned it in the writeups...'n I was too embarrassed to remind Sugar.
I have images of Ray feigning real over the top weeping and looking really down in the dumps and then somebody pointing you out to him in the crowd and suddenly a big beaming grin coming to his face hahaha ps John just out of interest what was your favourite fight you ever went to see from ringside?
