Mustafa stops Collins in the 8th..a body attack erodes Collins to the point where he's a sitting duck for some of Eddie's best shots in the 7th and after decking the brave Irishman a couple of times, he retires between rounds for an 8th round tko for Eddie. There's no way to deny the Mustafa of the Johnson fight.that was when he was at his best..he was peerless in that one.
A well trained E.M. Muhammad beats up Steve Collins at 175 pounds pretty decisively.... I never saw Muhammad fight down low at 160 or in the 160s depending on the contracted weight during his early career but, I do know he peaked at 175, so that's where I judge Muhammad.... E.M. Muhammad was damn good, but also enigmatic as hell... He slacked off in training and struggled with weight... MR.BILL
Collins was a tough, tough guy but I agree with this. See the below fights as an example: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saMRjPb6j0Q[/ame] [DM]xf1pl4_steve-collins-knocked-down-by-kevin_sport[/DM]
Yes, Mustafa was PEERLESS in this Johnson fight...note that he wasn't trying to whack out Marvin with any big power shots that he was capable of doing that very thing with...but rather he was just methodically and cooly picking Marvin apart with precise, debilitating body work...fighting as though he were Jack Johnson toying with Tommy Burns or something...no hurry, no rush, just seeming to be in a zone of his own in a way, completely dominating Johnson, like in 2nd gear or something. Collins would have not had a chance, as rugged and tough a guy as he was.
People always mention the Johnson fight, but Eddie was also awesome in the Jerry Martin fight as well. He absolutely thrashed Martin, more impressively then Saad and Qawi did.
eddie had a lot of impressive fights. a great technician but lacked the edge in character in the ring
Yes, he looked awesome vs Martin...and for the life of me, he seemed like he would be lightheavy champ forever..I was excited with his defenses...and the Spinks loss was a huge letdown.
