Bobby Gunn is a very good shout. It was bad enough him being blitzed easily by Enzo inside about 12 seconds, then to get another chance at the best fighter in the division..... shocking. Salita was bad. His story was alright but that's about it. He'd struggle to crack our domestic top 10's from 135-147. Is it worse being a voluntary or late replacement.... or a mando? Salita ran away from Willie Limond last year or the year before..... and was dropped by both Bob Arum and Lou DiBella for refusing to take hard fights according to an article in BM The tone of Arum's input was one as if to say ''wish I'd never bothered'' and ''glad I ran with Cotto instead'', whilst DiBella wanted him to face Malignaggi in a local derby on the undercard of a Taylor fight (might have been one of the Hopkins fights) but he refused because the money wasn't good enough :nut
You got to remember though that Burns himself was still working at DW sports after he won the fight against Martinez.
It makes me chuckle when you see the fury that some people work themselves up into over Hayes, Hattons and Calzaghes careers yet seem to judge Eubank by a completely different yardstick.
Very harsh on Nardiello. His southpaw style gave people some problems, nowhere near a 'shocking title fight' if you fought Nardiello. That was actually a good win for Woodhall, pretty good little fight too while it lasted.
Although he's gained a sort of cult following on this website, Wonjongkam is guilty of fighting plenty of 'unworthy' challengers. That said, in years gone by, the likes of Louis, Duran, JCC, et al seemed to get a pass for their 'keep busy' fights. Maybe it's just the pessimism of this generation, or maybe it's as simple as a change in terminology in one generation; one man's 'shocking challenger' is another's 'keep busy' fight:think.
Wonjongkams level of opposition as a whole is atroshious. Seriously, bet more than a few of his opponents wer emaking their debut.
Good points Los. I think in general you need to try and judge a career when its over rather than to complain too much about these keep busy/ shocking challenger type fights at the time.
Herbie Hide v Damon Reed has to be the worst geniune world title opponent for a UK fighter, truly shocking.
Not as bad as it looks. That was before Shane and Tito made Winky 'famous' and he was on his european tour. People didn't know much about him and no one really cared about him in America. Foster was a decent fighter with a biggish following.
As Slip says, Foster sold tickets and Winky was fighting for peanuts, he also took care of Ensley Bingham.
I remember Bingham being considered a real live underdog in the Winky fight. With many a pundit calling the upset...:nut
