Can anyone tell me more about this fighter? Like why did he quit? Was he any good? How good could he have been?
Never saw him fight, but have spoken to a few people in the European forum about him. From what I was told, Notice retired from boxing due to a torn retina injury. He was a member of the very same Terry Lawless stable in London that Frank Bruno and Gary Mason came out of, and in fact sparred on occasion with those guys. I have often heard that he was decent fighter with a good punch and a reasonable skill level, but most have also said that he didn't look as though he was going to be world class.
he was a small heavyweight too...he may have aimed at cruiserweight for a world title if he had to go on... he wasnt too young either, he was 30 as a british champ. he works on a building site today i hear....when there is work on building sites
Looking at his record and timing of his career, I've often wondered if he might have been a potential first heavy weight opponent for a rising Holyfield in 1988, or perhaps for Canadian champion Willie Dewitt. I think Evander would have demolished him, even at that early stage, but Notice and Dewitt might have made a nice fight in 1988.
I've never seen him fight before but was told he was a decent domestic prospect in the late 80's. you's pretty much confirmed what i thought though in that he wouldn't have cut it at world level. Nice one for replying:good
He had to retire due to eye injuries. I saw a bit of him on the undercards of Lawless shows, he was a classic upright European stylist, who would of benefited from a 200lbs Cruiserweight limit. Although more skilled, he would of struggled to beat a Gary Mason IMO, he was just too small. Being floored by the limited Hughroy Currie, puts a serious question mark on his chin. And as history repeatedly showed, American opposition just loved feasting on classic stand up European style fighters, and I only see painful defeats for Notice against any American in the top 25 in the late 80s. That said, Notice had enough about him to be considered a favourite against any continental European of the period with the exception of Damiani.
i was reading the last line and before i got to the end i was almost typing 'but maybe not damiani eh ?' damiani doesnt get remembered all that much, but he was no joke.
I whatched all his televised fights. for a british champion he was too good for the domestic scene and looked poised to move up. I remember him fighting mike jamison a tough american trial horse who went a few rounds with tyson and bruno ,everyone wanted to see if notice made the grade against him. he totaly schooled him. notice was prety slick, he had nice boxing- fought like zorra folley was a simular size to holyfeild when he first moved up. lawless had too much on with mason and bruno they were the prioritys at that time. I heard notice was doing well outside boxing when he got the eye injury.
