Well, if fat and undertrained Lewis still did it, I have little doubts he'll do much better in the rematch.

As to the rematch being "an amazing fight"... considering we just had to watch another "Klitschko vs punching bag" defence you may have a point. Still, comparing the first fight to other titlefights (I mean real title, not the ABC soup we have now) the fight was definitely not among the most interesting ones.

 

Yeah those monster like McCall and Rahman. Oops, did the Klits get KTFO by a bum like Rahman?

BTW, Lewis didn't fight Byrd but rather vacated the IBF belt. Are you saying that Lewis found out in the Klitschko fight that he still has enough in the tank to earn millions and millions of pounds - but he retired anyway? Sounds logical to me...

 

Vitali was tensed in the first fight. Having experience of fighting Lewis once, I guess he would be Much more relaxed and would use his ring IQ much better. He would not brawl from the start, would be more careful and hard to KO and we all know how hard it is to outpoint him. It would probably make up for Lewis coming in better shape this time.

Plus I would like to point out that Lewis was 1.5 of year since KTFOing Rahman and 1 year since brutalizing Tyson when he faced Vitali in 2003. He is a late bloomer with prime in mid 30's IMO. No one said a thing about him being over the hill when he was 37, then suddenly he's almost shot and Butterbean-like obese..? And doesn't want a rematch cause he has 'nothing to proove?? After promising one in public - when we all know that he wants to be seen as a man of his word, a gentleman etc?? Give me a break...

No, he wasn't.

Is Vitali always a competitive opponent to Lennox?

Yes, he is.

I'm not saying he's better but he's always game.

Boxing fans today would love to see Vit Vs Vlad, but that wont happen and it is very frustrating for boxing fans

 

A well-trained Lewis could beat Wladimir Klitschko. Even if he was 38y already. It could become a fight we would never forget, because Klitschko and Lewis are real Champions with great abilities.

Of course, it was very frustating for everybody.

 

Fair enough. I'm far from saying LL was shot, but he was definitely getting old and he was visibly out of shape for the fight. Given that LL was KO'd or in trouble against much worse fighters (Rahman, McCall, Briggs) I think Vitali has serious underdog chance against aging Lewis, although I would still favour Lennox here.

 

The first fight wasnt too bad and you have consider 2 things :

Lewis was under prepared , in terrible shape and past his best

And Vitali took the fight on short notice

Could you imagine the fight if both men were prepared and focused in the gym :deal would of been one of the more memorable HW showdowns in recent history IMO ...................

 

It probably would have been a safety first, dull chess match of a fight with Lewis eeking out a decision, due to his experience and the old adage, you have to beat the champion.

 

I don't think he had anything left to prove. To be honest Mike Tyson was the last of the fighters from his era and could have left it at that.

From a philosophical I like the idea of the "crown" being passed from the old champion to the hungry young champion, but at the end of the day Lewis won by a TKO in round 6.

Theres no doubt the fight should have been stopped, and Vitali winning on points up to that point is irrelevant - even if he had dominated for 11 and half rounds and Lewis KO Vitali in the final 30 seconds, a win is a win.

 

Yeah, except that it's not a punchers chance if it's about Vitali. IMO they're in the same league. Lewis may be a bit better but isn't on a different level. Head to head Vitali is top 10 ATG IMO.

 

It's not a tough call. Lewis was lucky in the first fight doing a cut. I think Vitali would've won against old Lewis if he had an opportunity to fight without blood all over. Lewis was years past his prime and in the second fight he would be probably even in a worse shape.

 

It would be a fake fight. Im not curious about the outcome.

 

I don't blame Lewis, but it is a shame a second fight didn't happen. Lewis got the chance to avenge the Rahman loss so I do feel sorry for Vitali not getting a second chance.
