5 Biggest Lies in Boxing

Discussion in 'British Boxing Forum' started by SplitDecision, Oct 22, 2010.

  1. 1. Punch resistance declines over a short timescale - Lennox Lewis anyone? All of this stuff about a fighter having their chin 'cracked' after 2 knockouts is a load of ****. Back in the day a fighter took KOs as a hazard of the job.

    2. All of the Sky boxing team are useless. The amount of shite I read about the sky team/match of the day team/ITV sports teams being crap from people in pubs/ESB who can barely form a cogent sentence makes me seriously doubt that it is a valid arguement. Who cares if someone comes out with an opinion that doesn't fit in 100% with your idea/has a voice that you find annoying. I LIKE JIM W. At least he injects a bit of excitement into the proceedings. I'm pissed that the hate campaign on ESB has got him into the studio because some people 'want a change'. This kind of attitude put the Tories in power.

    3. Margarito has any right to be involved in boxing today.

    4. Current boxers stand comparison with fighters from the early part of the 20th century. Less participation, training know how, capital investment and infrastructure, professionalism, frequency of fights does not translate to better fighters. Anyone who states otherwise is a cast iron :patsch Compare Robinson Graziano to Mayweather Baldomir. Not close.

    5. Boxing is a 'dying' sport. It's reached a low level now due to a confluence of factors (sanctioning body dominance/low level of participation/infrequency of fights/lack of public interest/) and I feel that it has reached a plateau. I'm still interested in the sport but we could have it so much better.

    + 1

Mayweather has great skill. Skill is the ability to turn offence into defence and vice versa seamlessly. He very rarely has to slip and counter, duck and counter, turn someone over on the inside, adapt during a fight to hit an opponent with shots that he wasn't throwing earlier. He is one dimensional in the sense that he beats people to the punch and that is it. It is his defence and offence. He is good at it but only because he is facing incompetent opposition. Throwing a quick accurate right lead does not equate to great skill in my opinion.

Were you drunk when you wrote this?

It's the shittest top-5 (or 7) I have ever seen, and that's in any topic.

Mayweather, not that skillful? I've ****ing heard it all now.

This isn't the five biggest lies in boxing, this is just five (or 7) random thoughts you've plucked out of your noggin on the spur of the moment, and then vomited onto an opening post. If you're gonna indulge in this kinda tripe, and act all "I'm the man in the know", at least put some bloody effort into it and come up with a decent 5 (or 7).

100% correct. Even if I don't agree with the criticism Watt gets, I'm not narcissistic enough to start a thread telling those who have conflicting views that they 'know' **** all.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion even if you don't personally agree with it, OP. This is a forum not a place where everyone should be expected to bend over in agreement on every issue.

The shut about mayweather is just a joke. Aesthetically you might not always find what he does pleasing, but to suggest no skill is involved is laughable. Part of his skill is changing tactics. Although not always evident. And FFs if a straight right works against a certain opponent why change?

Theres a few interesting points (rants) that you've made, but i actually think you're wrong on most of them ..

Firstly 'Punch Resistance Declines after a Short Period of Time' - I dont know if you actually meant with 'Age' .. Age causes every fighter to take more punches than they did in their prime, and as age creeps up on fighters the 'Will' to take punishment diminishes especially with fighters who have been in wars or who have previously been beaten. 99% of ageing fighters dont train the way they used too and a completely natural erosion of the body (suppleness, reflexes etc) has taken place ..

'The SKY Team Are Useless Campaign on ESB' - I actually agree with you on this one. Many posters on this forum criticise fighters and commentators, like they could do so much better .. Effective commentary is a real skill which is why Reg Gutteridge and Harry Carpenter are so revered. Jim Watt was a brilliant commentator teamed with Reg, because Reg was the main man, the anchor commentator, and Jim Watt made his sporadic points. Watt suffers today because he doesnt have Reg and he has to work with a complete idiot like Adam Smith. The best commentary Sky had was Darke and McCrory, they complemented each other quite well .. Commentating on Boxing is a real art, you only have a split second to articulate your point and you have to have a good commentary voice ..

'Margarito has any right to be involved in Boxing' - Im of the opinion that anybody who cheats or brings boxing into disrepute should be banned for life, but we are talking about a sport were money rules and Margarito can still generate money .. I would have expelled all the drug cheats too. The excusing of Mike Tyson after he bit Holyfield's ear off sent a very dangerous precedent, if you dont get banned for life for doing what Tyson did then you're not going to be banned for life for anything .. The Tyson ear bite damaged Boxing severely ..

'Current Boxers Stand Comparison With Fighters from Previous Era's' - I've never actually heard anybody make this point, i think everybody knows that this the weakest era in Boxing history by an absolute mile ..

'Boxing is Dying' - Only the youngest and most inexperienced fight fans will deny that Boxing is dying .. Yeah, you hear guys on here shouting from the rooftops about what great shape the sport is in with young talent coming through, but its all bull**** and they know it .. Take out Mayweather and maybe Pac and no other Champion would be a Champion in a previous era, now that is a sad indictment of this sport today .. Too many fighters, are to a huge extent media creations. David Haye has acheived nothing at heavyweight and fought nobody, yet he he's the WBA Champion and he talks like hes Muhammed Ali, that couldnt have happened in a previous era .. Amir Khan has fought nobody, has already been wiped out in a round, and yet he is a Champion of a major body and he talks like he's Sugar Ray Leonard .. This has been the worst decade in Boxing history and it'll be a miracle if it ever reaches the levels it did in the 90's, let alone the truly golden era's of Boxing ..

Boxing is also dying because fighters are more and more promoting themselves, this is great for the fighter because he wont get ripped off by Don King or Warren, but it is really bad for Boxing, because if you give fighters too much control of were their career heads then more often than not, they will take the path of least resistance and wont fight anybody who they think is dangerous .. As a Boxing fan, it was far better when Don King and his like were in control, simply because he would put on the fights that people wanted to see ..

Your last point is moronic - 'Mayweather has No Skill ' - Floyd Mayweather is the most skilled fighter since Sugar Ray Leonard, not as 'naturally talented' as Roy Jones Jr, but easily on a par or better skill-wise than Pernell Whitaker .. You cant just pigeon hole the word 'Skill' when you're dealing with a sport of many different styles. Floyd Mayweather is an ultra skilled, defensive, counter puncher who doesnt want to take punches, thats his style and its very effective, the fact that you dont like this particular style is neither here nor there. I didnt care for the styles of Joe Calzaghe or Rocky Marciano but i can recognise the skill they demonstrated within that style ..

You came up with some talking points which bordered on wild rants

I think people are bored of the stilted and sad talking that Hansen and Lawrenson spew out but that is not to say that they are not good at the job they do or that the BBC has any decent alternatives or intention to go out on a limb and get people in who actually try and create and cause genuine football debate. I now sky plus the show and fast forward through the talking....not because the pundits do not make valid or insightful points but because they bore the **** out of me and it has been the same shite for ages now...adding Alan Shearer to the team was a master stroke though....that guy is so damn entertaining....
