Imo, the only one that was avoiding RJJ was Michalczewski and vice versa.

'Should' implies that he went out of his way to avoide people, i dont think that is the case.

However he could have fought Eubank, Benn, McCllellan, Nunn, Hopkins (2), DM, half a dozen cruiserweights and maybe a couple of heavys.

Roy Jones' record is still impeccable.

Hopkins rematch was talked about a bit but Hopkins wouldnt budge in weight (Hopkins spent a lot of his career calling out super middles and LHW, but when push came to shove decided to stay at MW and priced himself out of negotiations) DM also priced himself out of the picture and wanted to stay in Germany.

I think Toney was the better titlist at SMW when Roy fought him rather than Benn and by the time Collins was in the picture Roy was at LHW.

These would all have been good fights but I dont know that RJJ can be accused of ducking them at the time.

I think a Toney rematch at LHW would have been good but again circumstances didnt dictate it. Toney was so inconsistent and flitted up to cruiser too often and that Roy had beaten him so decisively conspired against it

this was the big fight in boxing back in 2002.

everyone wanted to see it happen.

they had that famous altercation on HBO.

it fell apart over the purse split.

    jones wanted 60/40.

    hopkins wanted 50/50.

i thought jones was being reasonable enough at the time.

mainly cos he was champion and held a win over hops.

hopkins thought differently and it never happened until a few months back. :patsch

What I do know is that Roy fought a bunch of guys who he had no business fighting. The police officer, the subsitute teacher, and the sanitation worker, Lou Devalle, etc...

He took on these guys while in his prime and under a lucrative HBO contract.

Roy loved being champion and they were mandatory.

    Hopkins did the same

EDIT: Lou Delvalle was legit and WBA champ at the time deffo NOT a part timer

Frankie Liles: Liles wanted to unify with Jones 94 to 97
Steve Collins: was calling him out 95 to 97
Nunn: could of fought him at smw or at lhw when Nunn was his mandatory(1998)
    Benn: Calling him out 95
Eubank: Offered him a fight in 96, Jones turned it down. Saying that now you have lost twice to Collins, you are no good to me
Jirov: HBO wanted this fight, Jones turned it down(2002), its when HBO really had enough of him and started to openly bad mouth his choice of opponents
G-man: wanted to unify at mw(93)
Julian Jackson: wanted to fight him at mw(92-93)
Darius M: wanted to unify, but didnt want to leave Germany
Vitali K: Jones wba hw mandatory (2003)

Jones really took advantage of HBO with that contract I read an interview with Lampley once where he said "we really thought he would eventually fight someone but he simply refused to be realistic about anything he just wanted the money fighting low risk fights"

Hence, why HBO no longer gives contracts like that anymore Jones ruined it for everybody with his handpicking ways.

Jones just took advantage of HBO.
