Former world featherweight champ Naseem Hamed is making a comeback to boxing as a manager. He revealed to me last night that he has signed the light-heavyweight Callum Johnson, a member of GB's 2012 Olympic squad who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Naz, 36, says: "I have missed the buzz in boxing. I believe Callum will help bring the excitement back." Johnson, 25, will make his debut on Frank Warren's World Championship bill in Glasgow on 4 December. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...coaches-suspended-after-incident-2121312.html Ringside mentioned something about Naz getting a manager's license.
Saw this today on BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/9159688.stm I was impressed with him in the commonwealth games, seemed to have good power. Has anybody seen any of his other fights?
Yep, he looked really good in the commenwealths, although that doesn't say much tbh. The impressive thing is he was getting stoppages which is very hard to do now, with the way the Ams are these days. Not sure about his defence though and he looks a bit on the small side for a heavyweight.
This guy looked SERIOUS in the Commonwealth Games His style was much more suited to the pro game as well, pressure fighting, staying inside, dropping guys with big hooks to the body
His defense was the main thing the commentators were complementing him on. His hands were glued to his face most of the time and he rolled his head well in a peekaboo style.
Everybody that did anything at the commonwealth's had to have their gloves "glued" to their face, that was the way to work a pathetic system that didn't score body shots. As the N. Irish team mastered. What i saw was a guy who was always squared up, leads with to many hooks and looks to be easy to hit. Hope i'm wrong and he goes on to do great things. In the main i was impressed with him. :good
Yeah you're right about the scoring system but I still think it's a little unfair to be critical about his defense pure because he was square on and lead with a lot of hooks. These are purely attributes associated with the style he uses. He must have conceded the least points out of nearly all the boxers in the tournament which is surely a good indication of his defense.
well it certainly shows he conceded hardly any scoring blows to the face (seeing as body shots weren't getting scored) compared to the other boxers in the tournament, I think that would suggest that he doesn't have a problem with his defense as you implied. The lack of points conceded is even more remarkable when you consider that he is such an aggressive, attacking fighter.
Was impressed with him in the commonwealth games and if he is 25 then its fair enough that he's turning pro now and not waiting til after the olympics. Good luck to him.
There may be a couple of question marks over his chin as I believe he was seriously rocked in GB's vs the rest of the world and his corner threw in the towel. And Yes I realise that this sort of contradicts my argument about his defense
