Whoa, I can ASSURE you the Pong man didn't do it. The only things that make P-Won ban a brother are racism, Anti-Russite Valuev hating and for whatever reason anyone who makes fun of mimes. ...For some reason, he just loves mimes.

 

I dont think he could have been a GREAT fighter no. From what i remember of Magri, he won the british title after something mad like 3 or 4 fights, he was a homebird too and was fed a lot of tomato cans (as they all did, not just magri). I remember him avenging his Torres loss (european title fight?) then fighting Mercedes for the world title. Not much after that. He was a good wee fighter british-wise and he did have heart but i dont think even with a good chin that he could have been great. Hes owns a load of shops now doesnt he? selling boxing gear and sports stuff

 

Somehow Virgil Hill is underrated because of his boring style. And it was boring, but his win record in title fights and rounds fought in title fights is incredible and should warrant him some sort of greatness or recognition.

Johnmaff36 - maybe GREAT (in world terms) is pushing it a bit, but he did hold the WBC title briefly (KO'd in first defence). As virtually all his losses were by the KO route, the flaw was there was largely responsible for nearoly all his defeats and I do feel that with a more robust jaw he would/could have won the title earlier & held it for longer. He was certainly a crowd pleaser, chin aside, probably a better fighter than someone like Stracey, who is probably remembered more these days. Macri did enjoy the traditional Terry Lawless/Mickey Duff build-up, tomato cans I'm not so sure, but as house fighter he was usually matched with an "angle", an "edge" over the opponent, like Bruno was, and like Hatton & Khan under Warren when they were on the way up.

The Torres rematch was a 10 rounder at Wembley Arena (I remember going to the bout).

Charlie did own a sport shop in Bethnal Green Road (I bought a pair of boxing shorts from him in the mid 80's and a nice fella he was too). He went on to owning a pub in the East End, but I think he may have sold that now.

 

If James Toney wasn't such a fat slob he could of done so much more with his ability and toughness.

 

I read through this thread twice, looking for a mention of Bowe. If Riddickulous had any semblance of discipline and commitment to his professional career, who knows what he might have achieved? Instead, he was essentially done before reaching 30.
