Why do you watch boxing?

it's been a known fact that people who watch boxing are better in bed (true story) :deal

 

I have always watched boxing but it is over the past 10 years that i have really become a devout follower of it.

My earliest memorys of it are watching Mcguigan win the world title against Eusebio Pedroza when i was 5. I also remember seeing and being mesmorized by Tyson around this time and being British, seeing a lot of Bruno.

I think it was the primitive barbarism of the sport compared to other sports that i was compelled with. It is not often as a young lad you see that raw, animalistic power and energy mixed with speed and skill.

Even to this day i am still intrigued by that part of the sport (although not as much as i used to be). I think that part of boxing interests me for the same reasons that athletics/track and field do. Whilst both require lots of skill and dedication they are both very simple and primitive in their goals; who can run the fastest, jump the highest, throw the furthest and in the case of boxing, who is the better fighter. It's all rather alpha male and whilst in my everyday life i don't give a **** about that, in a sporting context it does interest me.

These days however i am much more interested in the skill of boxing rather than the brutal violence and KO's. I still like seeing a good old blood and guts war. Nothing gets you sitting on the edge of your seat like a Gatti-Ward fight, but these days i am more inclined to be impressed with the skill, heart and courage of the fighters taking part in this war rather than the violence of the act.

I also like the fact that whilst boxer's have a team around them, once the bell rings it is ultimately just them. They do not have team mates to fall back on if they are not firing on all cylinders. It is this mental strenth (as well as the physical strenth and skill sets) you need in boxing that i am amazed by and have the utmost respect for.

I could probably wank on for ages about why i like boxing but i suppose i should stop now.

I've watched boxing since Tyson in the late 80's, but became a hardcore fan in around '04.

I love the rush I feel at the opening bell, ...anything can happen from there...

 

I haven't been into Boxing for long at all really, I'm 23 but in England boxing is overshadowed by a lot of sports so it's not something you grow up with like Football is.

I think the first fight that I properly watched was Hatton vs Tsyzu, I mean I'd seen fights before that but not watched them with an enthusiasm I had for the Hatton fight. The first fight I can remember watching was a Vernon Forrest fight but I can't remember who it was against.

Since that Hatton/Tsyzu fight though I've been hooked ever since, there is just something about the art of boxing that intrigues me this is probably why I prefer Mayweather to Pacquiao but I'm not a hater that's just the style I prefer.

I love how there are so many variables in fights and how styles match up. I was just watching Winky vs Trinidad the other day and it fascinated me how Winky dominated the fight with speed and his jab.

There are a lot of things I don't know about Boxing but then I don't pretend that I do and that's why I watch loads of fights everyday because I'm trying to learn. I watch other sports for entertainment and enjoyment, I watch boxing for those too but I'm also trying to learn about the sport and that's why I love it.

I come on here and on youtube to listen and read what people have to say to learn things too but I don't post on here often because most of the time it's just people bitching.

 

I started watching last year as an 18 year old which makes me very new to the sport. I plan on starting in the amateurs this year as a light heavyweight. What attracts me to boxing is the beauty of it. I can't help but be in awe of the movement, speed, power and ring smarts of the greatest boxers. I love the technicality of the boxers combined with the brutality of the 'fighters'. I love the individualistic nature of the sport which creates differing fight styles that will inevitably clash. Once that bell rings it's only you and your opponent each with an unwavering resolve to lay a beating on each other. You'd just have to be a strong minded person to face that.

 

used to listen to brunos fights on the radio in bed when I was a kid, late eighties early nineties
then the great boxing on tv era when eubank and benn were household names, everyone and their mum knew who tyson was!

Then it went a bit quiet and there was a bit of a lull all through the nineties really, maybe thats when I was out getting caned and didn't notice much else. Naz was known pretty well and held the country's attention for a bit but so few people had sky it sort of all petered out

Got right back into it when I started hearing about Hatton from my mate in manchester, he was HUGE up there but not really known anywhere else to the casual observer, started following him (and boxing again) closely from tszyu probably,

Thats why Haye Harrison, as much of a joke matchup it clearly is, is great for boxing - because its getting people talking about boxing again. Everyone knows this fight is happening, contrast that to Froch Abraham for example, where only the hardcore boxing fans outside of nottingham even know who Froch is.

The pubs will be rammed for haye harrison absolutely rammed, i'm going down with three mates who aren't into boxing in the slightest but they're up for this one

The sheer amount of heart it takes to fight, the amount of passionate dedication it takes to train, and the beautifully artistic level of skill required to succeed.

Everyone has their own style, and the character of the individuals within boxing are what make the sport so great.

I was introduced the sweet science as an overweight hyperactive 8 year old.
My cousins and thier friends were all boxers and I trained at my local sports center with my Stepdad, uncle brothers and cousins. I then had a gym at home built up over time(gloves from santa etc) but my love from boxing came from the other people i saw fighting. The older boys one of them is a well known undefeated prospect taking the american route the other succumed to addiction. I lost interest in training in my early teens sadly but i never lost my love for the sport. I was in awe of the pure pugilist style of lennox lewis and the speed and skill of the youg roy jones jr the patience and cunning they showed was a marvel to watch as a kid. i also loved watching old videos of ali,foreman,bugner,moore(archie)and ken buchannan.I had the pleasure of watching live fights or reading the boxing news articles of bruno,benn,eubank collins,naseem hammed, razor ruddock michael spinks michael watson,and even less hearalded fighters (internationally)such as errol christie levander johnson(rip) basically too many to mention.It the late 80's early 90s when i was really young it just caught my imagination. Over the years many people have said to me that boxing is barbaric and just 2 men having handbags at ten paces, I used to try to argue with my teacher or friends about how smart and intelligent my heroes were and the skills used but they used to laugh at me and no wonder they didnt watch it or appreciate it in the way i did and still do .

The best punch i have ever seen was lennox lewis one-two knock out in his rematch with Hasim Rahman at 1:47 of the fourth round. Obviously there have been more exciting finnishes but what made it for me was the fact he lost the 1st fight and he wanted to torture rahman to show him he was not what he though he was. It was the sweet science at its best!! just the way he led him into the punch feeding it to him was pugilism at its best and That is why i love and watch boxing.

 

I Just like the gladiatorial aspect of it (without weapons of course). Two men walk into an arena, offer the best they have and the stronger, most valliant walks out with the spoils. That's the way everything in life should be sorted out.

 

Interestingly I dont like the beatings part, If a fight gets overly one sidded to the point where the commentators are even sayingf "The ref should stop this".
However I have been a massive fan of boxing since Kahn started on ITV for free. I remember I was playing a gig at a local pub, an he knocked out the guy in like 40 secnods an knocked his tooth out an it hought jeez i better watch his next fight he looks exciting.

Now I watch all big fights that are no over here, including prizefrighter and saturday night fight night.

I think that the skill and speed really attracts me. If a excellent boxer is fighting a poor one I find this becomes boring quick.

Then theres the beauty of coming on here every few days to read people defend thier fighter, critisize others LOL.

 

I was a kid in the Mike Tyson glory days. Back then, everybody watched the HW division, and I really enjoyed the sport back then.
Also, I remember reading about Jack Dempsey in a Norwegian Donald Duck magazine, and I also read a fantastic boxing story by Jack London that made an impression on me. I think I was always a latent boxing fan.

But, strangely, it wasn't until I saw the Cinderella Man that my boxing fanaticism really took off:
I saw the movie, thought it was great, but I thought: "hm! I wonder how that fight really went down. Was Max Bear really such a monster?" So I decided to watch the fight and do research on Bear. Then I decided to watch his fight against Joe Louis. Then I had to watch the two Louis vs. Schmeling fights...
... and the snowball effect went into overdrive.

Now I try to watch at least one fight every day, and I'm not getting tired of it. I find almost all sports to be insanely boring, but I truly love boxing, and I think I'm in it for life now.

 

Same in my case but with the addition that the amount of emotions that boxing brings to Puerto Rico in general where family and friends reunite to watch a good boxing match makes it hard not to follow. On a big fight night they talk about it in every corner, in every store, at work, at school, makes it to the frontpage of the newspaper, is just awesome. For example, everybody just talks about the Marg-Pac fight everywhere I go. Everybody seems to be an expert that night and I love it.
