Did The Brits Really demand Harrison v Haye?

It wouldnt have been a sold out stadium and a PPV fight if this was the case. In fact the contrary was true. The brits went all out for this fight. Lennox lewis, hatton, bruno etc all turned out prefight.

The brought in their best commentating team, had an extravagent prefight show etc,.

The british fans just got owned tonight, thats a fact.

When all the Americans were asking about Audley (after he'd been pretty good at playing the build-up media game), it was the Brit fans who were saying, "this is bull****, Haye will knock him out in less than 5".

The thing is, Audley is still something of a household name (not a massive one, but fairly well-known) because of his Olympic gold medal. He has 'brand value' that the likes of Chisora (and even the Klits) don't have in the mass-market consciousness. So it made financial sense in terms of milking the casuals for all they were worth, and perhaps giving some of the more dedicated fans a chuckle, but nobody who follows boxing was either asking for it or taking it the least bit seriously.

There may also have been an element of "Giving ol' Audley one last big payday for his retirement", but I wasn't in that contingent, either.

 

The general public did demand it, Haye knew this was easy money with no risk and it would sell, he made £5 million from this fight now he can genuinely fight a Klitschko.

I am pretty much known around here as a Haye nutnugger but if Haye doesn't fight Wlad, Vitali or Adamek next im well and truly off the bandwagon.

because everyone wanted to see audley knocked out. mate, i already said, he got knocked around the ring by irish taxi driver martin rogan, so why would anyone hype up harrison? he had the nickname fraudley, a farce, and audrey, LONG before this fight.

Did i ****in shite want it,its only the sad ****s who went for the unbelievable Harrison hype that paid the dollar for it.Britain has gone shite with boxing atm.

 

The source of that was Haye -- about how his email box was full of people asking that he fight Audley.

The funny thing about that is that the only reason he offered it as a reason / excuse was because most of the fans were asking, "Why aren't you fighting the Klits?", and the journalists were grilling him about that. So he had to come up with a reason in order to have a ready-made answer, even though it was nonsense. And now people are debating whether Haye's own PR excuses were true ... atsch

 

never, not once have i heard anyone "demand" or even express a slight interest in these two fighting. Its hype. Makes the British public look like a bunch of fookwits, which to be fair...is probably true

 

20 thousand people wanted it .. must say something. PPV will give a better answer. Hell dude got knocked out.. It was like an old tyson fight with him beating a another bum..

 

i really didnt want this fight to happen, its one of the few ppv's that i didnt get. and after just watching a replay of it, i am glad.

 

The fight got an unbelievable amount of coverage in the media over here. I'd guess they sold a shitload of PPV's.

In fairness, it got an unbelievable amount of coverage from the network that had coughed-up the purse and was selling the PPVs, which happens to be a pretty large network. The others didn't really cover it that heavily.
