Who will be remembered as the greatest British fighter? Calzaghe is my favourite boxer of all time and at the moment it has to be Joe but should Hatton beat Floyd it would be extremely difficult to choose.
If Hatton beats Mayweather, he is the better man out of sight. Beyond question. I think if both of their careers were cut short as of right now, Hatton would still be the one. I know I have this nice new avatar with Hatton in it, but I'm not insane about the guy, it's nothing like that. Just showing my support a little bit.
Calzaghe got his recognition late in his career. Sure he has 21 tittle diffences and is 40sumthin and 0. But if Hatton has a better overall career in the LIME~LIGHT and keeps pounding out victories as he has, it should be Hatton without a dought. And beating PBF would be a very good start!
Thinking of it I agree that if Ricky beats Floyd he has to be number 1 but at the moment it has to be Joe, purely based on each others resumes and boxing ability (which people will tend to forget when stating who was the best)
Hatton has been out of his comfort zone much more consistantly, including in the weight division above, where he is not fighting at his natural weight. Calzaghe, by contrast, is a LHW continuing to boil down to his comfort zone. Hatton is a two weight titlist despite physical disadvantages. Calzaghe is a one weight champ who has shown little ambition in terms of scope or competition. Hatton retired an ATG great in Kostya, Calzaghe's best wins come over talents significant but still unproven. Hatton now takes on the best figher in the world, and one of the finest in recent times, outside his own weight class. Calzaghe "looks great". This is a get it done business. Hatton has got it done more consistantly and recently, at a tougher level.
Good points. If Ricky beats Floyd then he becomes the greatest out of the two legacy wise but Calzaghe will always be known by boxing fans as the better boxer.
Better pure boxer certainly. The man is more skilled physically and technically. But I always beleive in the fighter that proves it. Ricky has shown greater ambition and heart and is certainly the man who has stepped outside of his comfort zone to prove himself. I'll take that over the prettier fighter any day of the week. I'm a Calzaghe fan and a Classic section poster. I think the last thread I started was about Calzaghe as being comparable to the legend Jack Dempsey in terms of resume (if not legacy), so certainly i'm not trying to hate Calzaghe or anything, i'm just horrified by his level of competition relative to his apparant talent. Interestingly, i'm working on a British pound for pound list at the moment (i like that kind of thing) and although it's very much in its infancy, I have Hatton one place ahead of Calzaghe, both hovering around 10, so what happens next will have a serious baring for me. If Hatton loses to Mayweather and retires whereas Calzaghe beat Woods and then Hopkins, they'd probably be switched.
As good as Calzag is Hatton is going to bring us more outta his career. He is in a deeper division and came to the states at 27 instead of 35 at that. Who cares if he doesn't go undefeated for that long. I'm going to favor Hatton more win or lose especially when Calzag matches up with Hopkins after all this time. He'll most likely win and that's the way the cookie crumbles :verysad
Hatton, at least he takes the tougher challenges and has beaten the better opposition but this madness for Calzag its fanaticism at its best. Calzag played it safe for years and is getting maximum mileage out of the Lacy fight. Kessler was tough but then again just how good is he? and who had he fought really? Hatton has more cred by beating Kostya and Castillo and taking on Collazo (he lost in my opinion)
Calzaghe simply because hes a champion with longevity. If and only if Hatton does beat Mayweather, then this thread might have some point to it. But as things stand now - we have a undefeated champion of 10 yrs with what is it now? 20 defenses? !!! and with 3 belts against an undefeated champ with no current belt and too early to say if he's got longevity that would make him a great.
I like hatton so I would say hatton. But calzaghe when I saw what he did to lacy live I was impressed. Never Really took any notice of JC after he beat my idol in Eubank.
