Earlier I read the no mas post and it got me thinking "Hey i've never seen that fight all the way through". So I found it on the net and watched it just now. I also saw in the no mas post that some said it was a close fight. BS!!! Sure leonard did run some but he caught Duran coming in over and over and even got the better several times when his back hit the ropes. Disgraceful moment for Duran and there is not excuse. He was just to slow for leonard and more than anybody else HE knew it. I like Duran and if i was watching boxing then(I was 3) i would have rooted for him but he got out of a fight he knew he would lose. Weak
Weak is not a word you should use when talkng about Roberto "Robbie" Duran You should try watching more of his fights, he's a bonna fide ATG :deal
Sure he is and i dont mean to say he's a "weak fighter" but that was a very weak moment in one of his big fights. If manny is losing to floyd and cant crack his d and just up and quits i would say the same thing. He never would but if he did it would be weak.
What Duran did that night was close to unforgivable. I paid for good seats at showing of fight, so did many others. He screwed fans, and hurt sport.
Many people overrated Duran. I am not sure why. I think it has to do with his machismo and confidence and charisma. He had them all, but when faced with a guy who was great and fast he did not win. The excuses come up that he was too high in weight, although he fought at 154 pounds as early as 1978, before his fellow opponents Hearns,Benitez and Leonard fought that high. He was only 29 when he fought Leonard the first time, and only 32 when he fought Hearns. He just could not deal with speed and lost to all the greats he ever fought, which is a fact. He was a great fighter because of his dominance at lightweight, yet he dominated guys he was clearly better than. I think top 25 great, but not top 5.
