For what it's worth, he was not born and raised in Mexico. Also he lost any the respect of most Mexican fans after the Trinidad fight. He did not get a free pass by any means.
as one top rank commentator said during the fight, there is only a thin line that separates bravery and stupidity, something like that. i do think that "warriors" knows the difference when he is about to cross the line..
If I'm not mistaken Margarito hit Pacquiao more than anyone since Marquez II. I'll have to check Compubox stats to verify that.
I know some guys from Puebla, these guys take pride in what they cook. You couldnt argue with these ****ers, they had the best mole, chicken every ****in thing. They had pride
I don't think it's a Mexican thing, it's just a boxer thing. Many fighters, of all ethnicities and nationalities, have insisted on staying in the ring when the smarter/safer choice would've been to stop. You guys have also given good examples of Mexican fighters who did choose to bow out and protect themselves. The Mexican "warrior" mystique has just been continually hyped by promoters, commentators, etc so much, it's become ingrained. It's a stereotype that feeds off itself. There's something to be said for Mexican pride, considering the way their history overlaps ours, and especially in this era where the U.S. is trying to cleanse itself of Hispanics, but the "warrior" thing, in the context of boxing, is sort of an old-fashioned racist device IMO. It's modern day exoticism.
Me being a mexican, this warrior stuff bothers me. Oscar was one of the best Mexican American fighters ever, better than most mexican fighters from mexico. That warrior stuff is a little overblown. I do not buy the mexican stuff and warrior. Warrior is about who you are as an individual not because you were born in a country south of California and north of Guatemala. Gatti was not mexican but had a huge heart. Cuevas only lasted 2 rounds with Thomas Hearns and barely got up. Chavez was demolished by Tsyzu and pretty much quit. Even when Oscar was beating up Chavez, Chavez was cut and wanted to quit. It is all bs. To say all mexicans are warriors is as dumb as saying all of us like refried beans. I like pizza mostly. It is an insult on us because is stereotypes us asfools who will stay and take a beating. Stupid.
I agree; heart is something that is not ethnic specific. I mean, if you want to get technical, "warrior" could be applied to soldiers of all countries around the world. When these "warriors' are ambushed, in a tactically poor position, or simply being "outgunned" (a la Pac-Marg), they retreat to regroup. I suppose they don't have heart. Furthermore, their lives are on the line too... And as I emphasized in my initial post, the cornerman, mexican or not, shouldn't be as "warrior-esque" considering they aren't being beaten like a pinata. Anyways, thanks for the comments as I was curious as to thoughts of fellow fight fans regarding this topic.
English translation:Mexicans, at the cry of war, prepare the steel and the steed, and may the earth shake at its core to the resounding roar of the cannon. Gird, oh country, your brow with olive the divine archangel of peace, for your eternal destiny was written in the heavens by the hand of God. But if some strange enemy should dare to profane your ground with his step, think, oh beloved country, that heaven has given you a soldier in every son. War, war without truce to any who dare to tarnish the country's coat-of-arms! War, war! Take the national pennants and soak them in waves of blood. War, war! In the mountain, in the valley, the cannons thunder in horrid unison and the resonant echoes cry out Union, Liberty! Oh country, 'ere your children defenseless bend their neck to the yoke, May your fields be watered with blood, may they trod upon blood. And may your temples, palaces and towers collapse with horrid clamor, and their ruins live on to say: This land belonged to a thousand heroes. Oh, country, country, your children swear to breathe their last in your honor, if the trumpet with warlike accent should call them to fight with courage. For you the olive branches! A reminder for them of glory! A laurel of victory for you! For them a tomb with honor! Mexicans, at the cry of war, prepare the steel and the steed, and may the earth shake at its core to the resounding roar of the cannon. Its not stupid. Its the way we were raised. I remember we had to sing this anthem every morning at school. We would line up and salute the flag outside the school yard. You know you really lose something when you have been living here as long as i have. You forget some of the principles you were raised with over there.
Couch Coach? Nice arguments... well, not really. Considering u just said how there is a lack of government services in MX (like it's my fault, or anyone else) wouldn't that give you more incentive to bow out gracefully w your faculties in tact? Doesn't seem like there is a lot of state support for the disabled, or in this case, brain damaged. Also, don't see how you choose to throw finance in with cultural machismo lol. Ummm, no matter how much "work", or number crunching you have to do, I'm pretty sure you go home pretty much unscathed. Lastly, as the lead in a corner I don't give a **** if a guy is from Mars, if he is hopelessly getting his ass kicked and has no chance of winning I'm stopping the fight. Period. By hopeless, I mean no snap on their punches, taking excessive punches to the head (basically porous defense), and significant facial damage is present. These are legitimate grounds to stop a fight. To those that argue otherwise, I sincerely hope you and those like you aren't in the corner of my fav fighters!
Margarito i think after round 10 just wanted to survive and as proud as he is I know Robert wouldnt stop it because of that. And no heart or being a warrior is not only for Mexicans. That would be stupid to say. It is just very engrained into our culture.
You sound like you need to find yourself a new sport. If anything nowadays are stopped too soon. Some are fair stoppages like Mosley-Margarito. That was a battered fighter I was screaming at the tv to stop it. But its like i have been saying Margarito was fine. He wasnt taking concussive damage. They kept checking him and he was seeing just fine.
Thank you for that; I liken patriotism to religion. Both are in essence a form of brain washing. To this day, I never got the whole concept of being "proud" of something you have no control over. More specifically, ethnicity or nationality. NO ONE had no control or say so on how, or where they were coming out of their momma's *****. "I'm proud to be 6'4"!" "I'm proud I have 20/20 vision!" Yes, it's stupid to me. I'd rather be a stupid "quitter" than a dead brave guy who got his ass kicked for some contrived "cause" any day.
I love boxing, I love all combat sports. Boxing by far is my choice, but a good scrap is a good scrap. Anyways, on to my point; Margarito fought with a fractured orbital for 8 rounds ( if the fracture was caused by the uppercut that cause the cut/swelling). If he would have ended up permanently blind because of it I assume you would say otherwise. Let's not forget Pacquiao HELD BACK for the last 2-3 rounds. If he would have went for the kill I seriously think many of you would have a different stance on this.
