Pac was just tired and hurt from the big body and headshots and didn't want to risk it. Roach told him to knock Margo out and Pac tried his best in the 11th. He just boxed carefully in the 12th to avoid some hail mary shot from Margarito but it sounded nice to the public that he was being merciful when in fact he was just playing it safe. He never showed Diaz an ounce of mercy when he knocked him out brutally and kept trying to KO Cotto even in the 12th and put an absolutely beatdown on ODLH. All of those guys were nicer people yet Pac had no problem going for the KO against them. Why would anyone think that Pac would give mercy to Margo when his whole team was slagging them off during the whole build up? He's probably the only fighter that has managed to hurt Pac in all his recent fights and he didn't want to chance getting caught by something big when he had the fight in the bag already. Pac pretended to not feel anything but he was pretty beat up in truth and admitted as much post-fight.
He was definitely talking to him, and he also definitely allowed him to survive the 12th round when he could have just decapitated him. Margo was helpless.
I think the reason he took it easy on him was because of the way his face looked. You could kind of tell that some permanent damage could be taking place. That's why I think he took the pedal off the gas for Tony, and not for the other guys. They looked messed up, but Tony had massive swelling and just looked horrible. And yes, Cotto was bloodied up and looked terrible, but even he still didn't look as bad as Tony.
pac already has a memorable quote after the fight that will probably reverberate throughout boxing history long after he has finally retired. When asked why he apparently held his punches in the latter portion of the 11th and the whole of the 12th round, pac said, "Boxing is not about killing each other." pure class, a great sportsman and a very decent human being.
I watched round 12 again as he had that talk with Margo towards end of round 11. In round 12 you can very clearly see Pac stop hitting Margo's cut, which would have been a perfect target. He mostly threw jabs to Margo's left side of the face and hooks, when he did throw his left he threw it down the middle to margos chin again avoiding the cut. Even his punches looked pulled, very unusual of him to fight that way against a stationary target he can hit at will. You hear his sparring partners comment about how he doesnt just hit your face, he hits specific parts of your face, thats how accurate he is, and he may have hit that cut twice in the whole of round 12 out of 30 odd punches landed.
Diaz's face wasnt a bloody mess like that, and he wasnt looking at the ref every 30secs asking to have the fight stopped. Watch round 12 again carefully, his punches looks pulled and out of 30 or so punches he landed, he may have landed 2 on the cut...it's clear he was intentionally trying to avoid hitting the cut anymore. He could have easy cos it was so bloody open...
Im not ripping pac, hes an atg in the ring! But hes not perfect, no one is!! PS: Did I ever say valero was a good man? nope. He had a great fighting spirit and he was a bad ass mo fo in the ring!! Go beat off to a manny pic ********!!!!
