Good article. Not sure about the mental illness per se, but the fact that Haye was guilty of making the fight and the dispicable actions of the "boxing fans" chanting that sh*t at Harrison make me sick. And in all fairness to Harrison did you see some of those shots he took? Sickening and he never looked for a way out. Hope the big man invests his money wisely and thinks better of boxing again.

That's a very fair parallel you draw there Davro - Hatton's fall was probably more precipitous because he had some solid achievements behind him at pro level, and certainly wouldn't have entertained losing so comprehensively in his two big step-ups, while Audley will have had more than a few nagging doubts and fears along the lines of what ended up occurring, but the point remains solid - if you've boxed for a career, you'll be very used to concepts like discipline, self-sacrifice and dedication, and will have built plenty of self-esteem off the back of whatever achievements these attributes have brought you. Does a few million in Audley's case or a few tens of millions in Hatton's make up for being lumbered with the national joke tag? Probably not if you have any self-respect at all, and I don't consider either man lacking in this quality, though Harrison's complete refusal to acknowledge his temperamental unsuitability for his career makes me less sympathetic in his case. At the same time, their fortunes give them options unavailable to the vast majority of people - as has been pointed out elsewhere, each man's lot could be a **** sight worse.

After all the talking he's done over the past two years, if Haye finally does sign to fight a Klitschko and gets done easily I suppose it will smack of poetic justice. The way his ego is at present that's gonna be quite a fall from grace if he gets annihilated as could easily happen. Truth is I now want him to lose, which is sad really since I've followed and supported him since way back when he started out... On Audley Harrison's cards on the BBC.

Great post Davro. As I said in the article, "whatever he was paid, it was a small price for a man's dignity." And let's not forget that even say, £1m, is probably £400k max after taxes and expenses.

I wish people, particuarly non-boxing people, would stop seeing Harrison as some sort of victim and remember a few things, not least the fact that he was (is?) European heavyweight champion, a title you don't get anywhere near without having a fair amount of ability and mental toughness, and nobody forced him into the ring at gunpoint. He was a decent fighter who was a way short of genuine world class. He fought every fight the same way, got away with it against lesser fighters, and was found out against Haye.

I think his use of cannabis may have caused a few issues. It depends on what he done as a youngster. It's apparent he's not all there but i don't see him getting put in straight jacket!!!

Harrison is no victim and I have no sympathy for him. Since he turned pro his been a joke from day 1 and is a lucky man to have earned the money he has done considering how bad he is.

Haye deserves stick for taking the fight. Easy pay day or not I was against this fight from day 1 and hoped Haye never took it. Haye had nothing to gain from this fight other than a fat payday and cant now criticise the Klits for there opponents as Harrison is no better than the guys they are fighting.

I know Sky had a PPV to sell but seeing on the website and on the tv the 'so called' experts telling us that Harrison can win was just pathetic. On the night of the fight seeing Johnny Nelson trying to explain where harrison wins the fight was just absurd and insulting.

Glad to see Barry McGuigan back on sky!! He speaks a lot of sense and I like hearing him speak about fighters and the actual tools of boxing.

I have no sympathy for Harrison, and no I don't think he's mentally ill.

    His behaviour was normal :

-He wanted money, he was offered 1 million pounds to do a job he was not capable of doing, but talked himself into it because an opportunity to make money like that cannot be passed on.

    - Having secured the job, he talked himself up in an effort to convince others he was actually good for the task in hand, and he talked himself up in an effort to convince himself that he would be good when the time came to deliver on the job.

    - When the time came he suddenly had a reality check, realised he wasn't up to the job, and performed accordingly, as someone who wasn't up to the job !

    - Afterwards he made some excuses as to why he performed so poorly.

This is perfectly normal pattern of behaviour. There are people bluffing their way into jobs they can't do, for the money , and being found out (or not) all over the place. It's normal.
People exaggerating what they do or can do in their careers, and believing their own bull****, is nothing unusual.

I don't feel sorry for Audley Harrison, i am very very VERY disappointed in him. He let himself compete at a mental disadvantage, it's clear for anybody with eye's to see this. He needs to work with sports psycholigist & Doctors like many other athlete's do.

    He's a very stubborn man.
