He's not big. Just a few newspapers mentioned his fight today.

Yeah, that doesn't help Sergio, Argentina is well known for their soccer, basketball, tennis etc , but Monzon was huge in Argentina, Sergio is barely known by the hardcore boxing fans in there as far as i know.

On boxrec, it says Sergio's first 26 fights, all but one (KO loss to Margarito in Las Vegas) were all held in Argentina from 1997-2002. From 2002-2007 he fought most of his fights in Spain and the UK before fighting again in the United States the end of 2007 to the present. Seems to me Sergio really started to make a name for himself while in Spain. He currently is based in Oxnard, California.

I think in the same manner, the Philippines doesn't give as much attention to foreign raised or trained Filipino boxers. Nonito Donaire moved to the US at a younger age and speaks English better than most Filipinos and therefore many don't relate to him as Flipino but rather a Filipino-American.

According to himself, in a Ring article, he has the wrong type of personality to be a hit with Argentinians. You "almost have to be a son of a *****" to be accepted by them, like Maradonna, and he's the humble respectable type. The opposite of England really, all our most popular fighters have been the likeable everyman down to earth type, cocky guys don't go over well here.

Depends how big the sport is in Argentina! Compared to football, i think boxing is light years behind. So his fame might just be average there.
