Yeah that whole MOST FEARED MAN IN BOXING labels always seem to get started by Bloggers, in forums...etc. Margarito Claim to fame was that he beat two overrated Boricuas in Cintron and Cotto. In fact, Cotto could have won that fight easy, as he was totally out-boxing him for the first half of the fight. Then a funny thing happened along the way....the "real" Miguel Cotto showed up and brought his familiar tools with him: Poor Defense and Lack of Stamina....NUFF SAID!!!

As far as Williams, Always showed the ability to take a punch...AT 147LBS. Cuz' he was getting Blasted in the later rounds of the Margarito fight, and kept standing. And in the first Quintana fight...DAMN, Quintana was landing BOMBS all night long. But since Quintana is a charter member of the "Pillow-Paws" Mailignaggi Club, he never hurt Williams. It's a whole new ball-game taking shots from fighters at the higher weights.

Now with all that being said. Both Williams and Margarito will still be viable names in their respective divisions. I hope Margarito vs Cotto II gets made...DAMN, THAT WILL BE A GREAT FIGHT. I see No reason for two fighters coming of a loss to the same fighter (Martinez) can't get it on: Williams vs Pavlik in 2011...In fact, Marg/Cotto and Williams/Pavlik 2011 on the same card will definitely get my money!!!!

they were feared because they were very big welterweights. they are middleweights during fight time.

Let us not humor ourselves into thinking that they were feared because they are skilled. That is not what they bring to the table. Any fight against them is never easy, similarly with Clottey.

No Way Man....I had Cotto by "Sweet Science". I thought Cotto would box his way to an Easy Decision. But I found out more about Cotto in that fight, than I did about Margarito.

I kind of agree with this point except with a more positive note. I think they get blasted a little too much, but what they bring to the table is a tough night for anyone. They didn't bring in much money, were physical freaks, and beat up just about anyone in front of them even in losing efforts. So take a pay day against too someone who might outpoint you, or risk a pay day against someone who will beat you up.

If anything being the most feared usually means the most ducked. Now that they have become vulnerable and stepped up in weight they should be able to get some paydays themselves.

why's it so hard to believe? at some point guys will lose a step. in my eyes calzaghe was 2 or 3 fights away from receiving his first loss. i still would not want to mess with either paul or marg when they were killing it. not suggesting that paul is over the hill but he's definitely not the most feared fighter anymore. i now have an even more clear picture as to why some boxers refuse to quit after several losses because the landscape changes. soon after cotto lost to margarito, you would have thought i was out of my mind to say cotto could be the favorite to win a rematch.

I guess they all should be lining up to fight Williams at 147-154 then..somehow I don't see that happening

    Boxing is like any industry.

    90% goes into marketing
    10% goes into development

    Pure PROPAGANDA!

You missed the point that he fades down the strecht and, Margo is stronger as the fight goes on(regardless of the wrapgate or not). Cotto's boxing skills are way overrated and he proved me right, simple as that.

nobody feared these guys they just rarely brought anything to the table but yet were seeking big fights.....they hadn't done much of anything...i'd still pick Williams to carry on and do well.

Margo on the other hand just never has shown me he is that good...yes he has a good win over Cotto....but what else...what has this man done?

    Agreed

Too much is made of fighters losing these days and thats why so often fights aren't made.

I hate the way fighter's reps get shredded by so many idiots the moment they lose.

Anyone can get ko'd out or have an off day

Thats not to say I thought Williams would win, I had Martinez winning

Or we could finally take it the other way and say, man, old man Mosley and Pac and Martinez are still the trufth!

Margarito did not impress me until the Williams and second Cintron fight, and then I thought he really was as tough and hard as they said, tough and just proficient enough to completely overcome a more skilled opponent who was a smidgeon less tough. They are both world class in some departments for sure. Anybody who beats down Cintron so comprehensively is or was good.

I think it likely Margarito, partying after his Cotto carreer defining win, had a bad night against Shane in a style Shane felt very comfortable with, not that Tony sucks at all. And every time I see Martinez fight lately I think, wow, he really is a pretty complete fighter even on the world class stage (its easy to look complete against sub par opposition early in your career unless you are Pac - the only fighter whose career I own who looks much much better against elite opposition than he did early and whose KO record rose - maybe Martinez is similar in that inverted, anti-common sense developmental way).
