Im no expert in historic P4P lists but have you seen anybody get up to the top 3 faster than Martinez? He was relatively unknown until he fought Cintron (in 2009), then he fought PWill, then Pavlik, and now PWill again and IMO if he fights Pac he has a good chance of beating him and becoming #1 P4P in the process. What a good run in such a short time.

Well thats what happens when you take big chances. I mean i honestly did not think Martinez would beat Pavlik. Even as limited as Pavlik is i thought there is no way Martinez whose defense is not the best can take Pavliks right hand.
However he knew that and improved his defense for the fight.

How long did it take Tyson? He became HW failry young. Also Vargas comes to mind.

This really does not say much about the fighters now for that to happen. I do not remember how high Honeyghan got after he beat Curry, but he had some nice wins right after that. The Gene Hatcher knockout was devastating.

he jumped insanely fast for a somewhat unknown fighter but beating cintron easy even though he got rooked and slapped pavlik around and should have won the first paul fight. I am not surprise. The guy is good and they way he handle the elite fighters makes the case.

I dont believe he becomes p4p no.1 if he beats Pac, it would obviously be very impressive but i think the size difference would mean he would go to no.2 but not no.1
    Just my opinion.

Calzaghe got to number 3 the same way really. Beating some useless, overhyped Americans. Calzaghe did it by beating Lacy, Kessler (not strictly an American as such) and Hopkins.

For Lacy, Kessler & Hopkins read Cintron, Pavlik & Williams.

There are a lot of Ameribums on those p4p lists.

    Pacquiao
    Marquez
    Martinez

Always was that even before the Williams fight because i knew Martinez would win (not by KO though). I personally dont include Mayweather because when fighting for one pay day a year you shouldnt be in there.

    Especially at this late stage.

Above poster is sort of right. There are many overrated American fighters. A fighter with a good career comes in and beats a couple and everyone perks up even though he's been fighting the same way for awhile. The truth is Sergio Martinez is probably not as good as e was 5 years ago. Every country hypes their own of course. America just happens to control most of the media so the effect is profound.

Hopkins is an ATG, and Kessler is not even remotely "American" he is Swedish.

    Big difference. :deal

He's not number 3 yet, and beating Pac or Mayweather wouldn't move him up in the same way Wlad Klitschko beating Pac or PBF wouldn't move him up. Let's see how he does at super middleweight if he wants to be considered a top 2 pound for pound
