McEwan tells Golden Boy to take a chance on him Unbeaten middleweight boxer Craig McEwan feels Golden Boy Promotions are not giving him the opportunity to take his career to the next level. The unbeaten Edinburgh middleweight is keen to take his career to the next level but has been let down by his promoters who have rescheduled his latest bout; now tentatively set for January. The 28-year-old, who is based in Hollywood, California, insists Golden Boy lack belief in his ability to become a world champion despite having won all 19 of his professional fights so far. He suffered another blow when they left him off the undercard of Amir Khan’s WBA light-welterweight title defence against Marcos Maidana on December 11 in Las Vegas – a fight which would have garnered McEwan much needed exposure both sides of the Atlantic. “That show would be good for me. It would let the UK fans see me and let them know I’m here if they don’t already know,” said McEwan. “It would have been so good for me to open doors maybe for a fight in the UK or a big fight here, so I’m gutted really that I am not on that bill. “By not fighting, it affects everything. I don’t work, my work is boxing so I can’t provide for my kids and when I don’t fight it affects my sponsors too. I can’t get sponsors if I don’t have a date. They can’t help me and I can’t do anything for them if I’m not showcasing their name.” McEwan is eager to get back into the ring and face top class opposition in order to get his hands on a title. However, with last minute cancellations, training for non-existent fights and a general lack of integrity from Golden Boy, McEwan has been left frustrated by the Oscar de la Hoya-led outfit. “I’m fed up now. I think I can go all the way - being out here, sparring with the best, working with the best. I am ready, I just can’t get the fights,” explained McEwan, who has won all 19 of his professional contests. “I just think by now I should have had 26 fights and I am still trying to get my 20th, so not a happy guy. It’s hard seeing all the boxing on TV and I know am ready for it.” With the UK fight scene buzzing at the moment with the likes of Carl Froch, David Haye and Ricky Burns, McEwan may be looking closer to home if Golden Boy don’t pull through for him. Ricky Hatton’s promotion company, Hatton Promotions, have strong links with Golden Boy and a fight in the UK under the Hatton banner is one option McEwan has been pondering: “If Hatton can get me fights then I would definitely consider that.”
Any ideas about what Mcewan should do next? Should he ditch Goldenboy if he can? Come back to Scotland and latch on to Warren or Hatton?
Yes. Warren could make something happen for him. If Macklin doesn't get a world title in his next fight, he should fight McEwan or if he does and wins, it would be a good first defense and would sell well in Britain and Ireland. People saying that he should fight Lee, I don't think McEwan is on Lee's radar, although I'd love to see it happen and would favour Lee to stop him.
:good I guess its never too late to change. The thing is, I have watched a few of Craigs fights and cant say that I was too impressed. But, hes never been given a real chance of progressing and its not his fault he hasn't been fighting more often. Coming back to the UK would probably give him the best chance of showing what ever potential he has. If he doesnt do too well, then we could at least say that his talent was not wasted but he was just not good enough to be a World level fighter.
