cheers for that d-mac:good that was a nice crunching ,nose-breaking punch. he's pretty awesome when he sets himself.
It remains to be seen how flawless he is against Elite-level opposition, which he hasn't fought for years.
I am/was a big detractor of Donaire. Mainly as he was a 'fly', feasting exclusivly on ****. Sidorenko was a big step up for him, not as good as Vic but that was 3 years ago, and he dealt with him easy. I am a big fan of Sidorenko and I knew he had a terrible style to beat Donaire, but I did not see him getting blown out like that. Sidorenko IMO could still beat Perez or Agbeko (again). I really do like the look of Donaire, again, and I would make him a slight favrouite over Montiel but it is a very close fight.
Apart from Pac, Donaire is probably my favourite active fighter style-wise. His punches are so crisp with a beautiful mix of speed, power, reflexes, and accuracy. I think Bantamweight will prove to be his best weight. I believe he will beat Montiel by mid-late rounds stoppage after a fair few difficult rounds and will go on to fight and beat the best of the packed bantamweight division. I think he will come unstuck at some point however due to the fact that he rarely if ever throws combinations and I believe he can be outworked by guys with size, strength and intelligence. Also he can sometimes get caught admiring his own work. I think we will have to wait a few years for this to happen though.
I'm a fan of Nonito he has real talent and star potential and it was nice to see him in a real worthwhile fight for the first time in 2 years. I have been really annoyed by Donaire's management since leaving Flyweight. After beating Vic he faced the right people considering his switch from Gary Shaw to Top Rank, fighting in a less popular smaller weight division and his lack of experience going into the Vic fight. Luis Maldonado was an experienced proven top 10 Flyweight who was a good first defence and gage of whether the Vic fight was a one off. Moruti Mthalane was his mandatory and first fight in 11 months who has since gone onto win a title and gave Donaire a tough fight. Raul Martinez was a legit contender who was undefeated and it was an opportunity to fight in his native country and build a name in the Phillipines. Also Martinez is now on the verge of a World Title shot. But after that it has been an absolute joke. Concepcion was a 15-25 Supr Fly, I know they couldn't go for a title because Vic held 3 of the titles and was involved in a fight with Agbeko and Montiel was just about to vacate to move up but they could have gotten a more proven opponent. I don't blame them for Manual Vargas even though it was a joke as it was a late replacement but the original opponent Guerson Guerrero was a 25-35 Super Fly, who had already clearly proven to be nothing more than a fringe contender at best. It was a joke fight to begin with. Tyson Marquez was a Flyweight who in his previous fight had been shutout and dominated by a fringe contender. Why was that fight made. I get they had problems making the Vic fight and that caused problems but why didn't they push to make a fight with Simphiwe Nongqayi, Hugo Cazares, Omar Andres Narvaez, Jorge Arce etc. They could have taken them on at any time and it would have added something to his resume and a fight with Arce or Cazares especially would have been interesting fights that would have built his name. Like I said Sidorenko was the first fight since Martinez that was worth taking and I really hope his team get their act together.
Nonito has asked for fans to send there prayers to Sidorenko. He's still in hospital. Hope he be ok. Thanks for posting.
Nonito was razor sharp there, I felt for Sidorenko but his style was made for Donaire. It was a wise piece of match making for a debut at Bantam. Nonito has it all in his locker but he does always give his opponents a lil bit of hope when he just gets over zealous. But for the most part he looks sublime. Montiel will bring the test he been craving and needing. It be nice to see Donaire fight at a pace. He dictates the tempo of bouts because he's that good but it be nice to see him under intense pressure. Saying that why should he be when he keeps guys off him. Nice to see Donaire look healthy and sharp, hasn't looked that well recently but Bantam looks like home.
Montiel is a completely different fighter to Sidorenko, he hits extremely hard and has underrated hand speed. I think he will be able to find Donaire with regularity and stop him despite taking some big punches of his own. In regards to their comparative punching power just view their respective fights with Rafael Concepcion. Either way it will be a fantastic fight and I can't wait until February!
Bantamweight is the deepest division right now. You got the tournement this weekend and it hasnt even got the best 4 fighters in the division involved.
Donaire's best performance since the Vic win. He looked awesome, great speed and power, really picked his shots well. D Mac, yer man Montiel fights this Saturday. He better not mess things up by losing :fire Donaire's said he can go all the way up to super feather, his manager says feather. I can see Donaire sticking around at bantam for two fights - Montiel and if he wins the winner of the bantam tourney.
Don't you worry about Montiel, me old son. He's fighting a guy called Eduardo Garcia, who appears to have beaten himself by disqualification in his last bout: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4249&cat=boxer Eduardo Garcia WDQ Eduardo Garcia How random is that.
Bet the commentators loved it. He's lost everytime he's stepped up, should be easy enough for Montiel.
