McCall defeats Oquendo by decision

    Oliver McCall won a split decision over Fres Oquendo tonight. The win gives McCall the IBF Intercontinental heavyweight title belt.

    It was a tough fight to score; Oquendo scored points with jabbing and running tactics, and clinched a lot. McCall drove forward like a Sherman Tank all night though, walking Oquendo down. McCall hurt Oquendo a few times with heavy body shots. In the 8th round McCall had Oquendo on rubbery legs after landing a clubbing right, but Oquendo survived.

    McCall went for broke in rounds 11 and 12, swinging wild, powerful punches from both hands. Most shots didn't land, but the offensive gave McCall an aura of authority and aggression. Oquendo clinched and boxed in return.

    Oquendo's corner was very angry about the decision, feeling that they had the fight won on points. McCall's corner felt the decision was just, saying that they forced the action and took the real estate with a non-stop attack.

    After the fight, Oliver laughed during an interview and admitted he was 15 lbs overweight at 254 lbs. McCall said that if he were only ten lbs lighter, he would have knocked Oquendo out.

    I don't know what to say. I guess it could have gone either way on the cards, and the judges' philosophy was to favor the occasional power puncher over the boxing and jabbing.

    One thing McCall has always had is great conditioning to go with his excellent chin. If he's turning up for fights fat and (probably) coked up then it's just sad. Still, I didn't think he could beat Oquendo.

    Oquendo always fights like a ***** and then whines about the judges punishing him for it. :lol:

    as i said in the other "mccall defeats oquendo thread" ...it seems that oquendo did not deserve the decision this time, oh well.

    It could have gone either way. Typical Fres situation: he doesn't hold his ground, and this feeds the mindset of judges who favor aggression over skill.

    It could easily have been 7-4-1 for Fres, if one favors light pesky jabs over aggression. Then again, McCall sometimes shook Fres, while Fres's best punches made no impression on McCall whatsoever.

    Oquendo's punches had absolutely no impact on McCall whatsoever. Despite being close to 50 in age, and in spite of being fat and (by his own admission) out of shape, McCall just walked Fres down. McCall ignored Fres's punches as if they were just slaps.

    McCall just kept swinging the occasional wild left or right, sometimes catching Fres to the body.

    I feel sorry for Oquendo he gets robbed again/

    Mormeck, Holyfield, Toney, and no Mccall. This guy can never catch a break.

    Glad my man Oliver McCall got the nod with the judges. Fres is a whiny little ***** anyway. I've been an Atomic Bull fan for a long time, I wanna see him get a few more solid wins before he gets out of the game for good.

    this is the reason people don't care about fighting for titles anymore....

    their r too many of them with half of them meaningless!!

    This is one of those fights that could easily have gone either way, depending on whether judges lean toward a boxer or a fighter.

    Olliver still has decent defense and a granit chin. I want him to face Vitali Klitschko. McCall has a puncher's chance against the Klitschkos.

    Quite pleased for Ollie, it was a horrible style match-up for him and I was expecting a shut-out. Didn't think his weight was good, glad he knew it, now he has to do better.

    On one hand I totally feel for Oquendo, who seems to have gotten the shaft on more than one occasion.

    On the other, I really can't disagree with this comment and the fact it keeps on happening to him is very telling. It happens too often to be co-incidence.

    Years ago, Oquendo should have taken a serious look at the way he fights and realised he can't be quite so negative in there. In a close fight most judges will favour the guy showing aggression over the guy fighting amateur style. Just a 5% difference in performance from Fres could've netted him 3 or 4 big big wins by this point.

    Oquendo can be horrible negative and hard to watch. It's happening too much to be a coincidence but he's not going to change his style now.
