How do YOU use it? I know this sounds like an odd question, but a friend of mine pointed something out to me the other day. He told me that I never use my right hook... This isn't exactly true. I throw it after I take a step to my opponents left. I also occasionally sneak it in under my opponents left elbow. But other than that I don't have a real use for the right hook. I use every other punch, yet the right hook seems to be kinda neglected. I am only really interested in sparring, so I am not pretending to be a master boxer. However, I am sure there are much better uses for the right hook than how I am using it. I intend to ask more guys around the gym how often they use theirs, but I figured I may as well throw this question out to the good people of ESB. How often do you use the right hook? When do you use the right hook?
Sometimes you can get more affective shot by using the right side. It wont happen as often as left hook but it does happen on the inside.
Good point... I guess that is a place I could use it more. The thing is, the guys I spar with tend to use a split guard. So I usually just throw uppercuts all day. If that didn't work so well I probably would have to use a little more variety in my punches. I also try to avoid the real close in-fighting. I have longer arms so I tend to get bullied a little more on the super up-close distance. Good point though... So do you box much Leon? Is this how you use it? Or are you just giving general advise?
I boxed for awhile. I was a left hand happy southpaw. I had long arms, so I kept a distance to maintain the angle advantages of being a southpaw. Being a southpaw means nothing on the inside. Your right hand has a longer distance to travel since it's in the back, so looping it from longer ranges would make it easy to see and counter. That distance problem is gone on the inside. Watch some Rocky Marciano to see him use "right hooks" in tight spots.
if your orthodox the best way is to throw it is like tyson did against buster mathis. step outside their right hand and you can catch them almost defensless for a split second or two but youve gotta be quick and sneaky. if you use this while theyre on the ropes thanks to the friction of the ropes sometimes you can throw it four or five times body and head before they can turn into you and defend
It's funny you ask because it took me three years to learn how to throw this punch! I was so stuck on throwing the straight right that my body almost didn't let me throw the right hook. I've finally gotten it, but have the same problem - I have no idea how to use it.
I throw it when I'm in close. I try to really put my body into it sometimes, max power, don't care if they block it, I just want them to know that they'd better keep blocking it. Then I'll throw it as a little slap and come up with an uppercut. My favorite use for it is when a guy's on the ropes, if you can get him to lean away to your left (kinda like a shoulder roll), just whip that thing over his shoulder and catch him upside the head. This seems to really disorient people, and I know from taking a few off other guys that it does have an effect.
Short side step to the right, pivot your body, throw that sucker to the body. Watch your opponet's face fill with agony and smile.
I've used it almost exclusively to the body...usually via combination...followed by a left uppercut to the head...to the body if he's cornered.
jab high, then solid right hook to the body.. the hissing noise you hear at this point will be your opponent deflating as you force all the air out of them.
