Hopkins was always about economy. Even at his peak. Qawi would simply out-hustle Hopkins in the way you describe Joe and Jermaine. It wasn't their speed as much as their willingness to commit to clusters of punches. Hopkins likes to throw through the combos. Taylor had a nice side-step. Calzaghe struggled early on because he was used to being able to close down a man's offence with his mini-blizzards. Hopkins can stand in the eye of the storm and return. It took Calzaghe a while to adjust. Qawi would have had more on his shots than either of them and was more robust.
Qawi would have more on his shots but lacks the speed that Calzaghe and Taylor had, and if you can't hit the target it doesn't matter. And Qawi doesn't have the workrate Joe had either. B-Hop is one of the best defensive fighters of all time, he knows every trick in the book to get away from the target plus he's also one of the best counters punchers in history. Only way Qawi can win is to make it a brawl or inside fight, and Hopkins would nullify that from happening by cuting down on his punchout put and distance. And Hopkins also has one of the best chins in history, so even if he does hit him flush, B-hop is not gonna go from one shot. Antwon Echols was a devasting knockout artist and B-Hop took his best punch and walk thru it. Now i'm not saying Echols is as good as Qawi but he could crack very hard. Qawi was a very good lightheavyweight but I think B-hop, the master technician that he is, is all wrong for him. And your bringing up the win that Jones had over B-Hop, Hopkins became a much better after that fight. I'd still take Jones over a peak Hopkins, although it would be more competitive. As for the thread title, I do agree that Spinks would beat Jones as well.

The difference in evaluation of boxers of the past (even if it's a quarter of a century ago) and modern boxers is a well-known thing. If you want to criticize that, your historical knowledge and common sense must be lacking. You never pointed out anything extraordinary about Qawi's skills, beside the awkwardness which I mentioned myself. If you call that being generous, alright then. Name me some great fighters of the past 50 years and we will compare who has the worst record. LHW limit is 175 pounds. Well known fact. If you don't agree with it, it's your right, but those 2 fights were held above that limit. A couple of pounds can be important, as has been pointed out in one of recent threads about Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. Spinks, and especially Foster are midgets as well then. So what's your ranking of them, all-time at light heavyweight?
Spinks record looks great at LW but he never faced anyone as fast as Jones. Also, many of his victimes were former Saad Muhammad KO victims like Marvin Johnson, Vonzel Johnson, Yacqui Lopez and Murray Sutherland. He also barely beat Eddie Davis, people tend to forget that fight. He oupointed Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in a pretty close fight, and Mustafa had to lose 25 lbs because he had just fought Renaldo Snipes at 200 lbs. He also decisioned Qawi in another pretty close affair. But these two had styles totally different than Jones. They were both technically sound defensively, whereas Jone relied on his feflexes, not technque, on defense. Jones, for his part, looked great at Light heavyweight until the first Tarver fight. But, remember Jones was coming down from heavyweight and was 34 years old when he lost to Tarver. Let's compare prime v. prime, not overall record. I think Jones had the speed and mobility to outbox the slow starting Spinks. I think Spinks was physically stronger and would have more stamina down the stretch. Spinks would work the body, because Jones would be too elusive early to catch many head shots. Spinks was a tremendously patient fighter. Assuming its a 15 or even 12 rounder, I expect Spinks would catch Roy late. He would expose Jones lack of defensive technique late in the fight, after slowing him down with the body shots. I pick Spinks by 12th round ko while behind on points.
