There is always one fight in a boxers career , when they need to call on every part of training and heart and show these in the ring. For me it was Leonard vs Duran I, Leonard that night came up short but was always going to be great. Khan showed on a lower level tonight that he can gut it out with a real puncher , showed experience when holding in the 10th, and came through in a fight of the year candidate. A couple of points he should look at, 1. Dont be touching gloves to start the 11th round , when Maidana is looking to take your head off. 2. Even when backing away keep the jab moving . But all in all a really great performance , and I think Roach needs a lot of credit , Khan looks a solid 140 lb Champion.
Impressive win by Khan....but i can't help but wonder how much this fight might have taken out of him. Khan took some hellish shots tonight, and thats certainly NOT going to prolong his career. Remember, Bowe was never the same after his first fight with Golota, Lacy hasn't been the same since his fight with Calzaghe, and there are lots of other examples of this kind of thing. All in all, props to Khan, he proved that his chin is pretty solid tonight.
Bowe lost Lacy lost Khan won. That's the difference. This fight was a psychological hurdle for him and he crossed it. I bet you $100 he never fights in the same way again. He proved he can take massive shots and still stay on his feet. He doesn't have to try and do that again now ever.
Khan didn't get hit that much. Sure he ate a few big shots from the tenth, but Maidana must have landed less than a hundred punches in total. It wasn't a prolonged beating like the fights you mentioned.
Khan has many assets that you can credit him for, but tonight also proves that Khan does have a shakey chin. Hopefully, like hearns before him, he can keep making up for it with his other talents.
Actually Bowe officially won the fight by disqualification.......but still, he was never the same after that fight.
i'm interested to know; i didnt want to start a thread but maybe people here could shed some light. i am genuinely curious as to how roach would go about strengthening khan's chin....cos i was convinced if someone has a weak chin then thats it; glass forever. anyone know how this would be done?
If you look at khans body now compared to his 135 days , you will see he is much more in balance now. Before he had a big upper body and skinny legs , now smaller top and stronger legs , also a better diet . These dont add muscles to your chin, but a fighter with strong legs has a better chance of holding a shot .
You can not really train a weak chin to become granite. Just train your head, body, feet and hands so that your chin is hard to reach. How to do that is up to the trainers and experts.
