They are a bit lacking defensively. All they are able to do when in trouble against a bigger hitter is put their hands up and run, eg Pac against Margo and Khan against Maidana. They don't attempt to counter, especially Khan.

I know this is nit picking, these guys are both incredible fighters, just seems Roach should work more on defence.

They put those earmuffs on, too and get hit with uppercuts through the center.

    Pac doesn't counter?

    hmm

I guess I see things that other don't. Pac counters people all the time.

Also, those uppercuts Pac takes up the middle are usually smothered and don't do much damage. If I'm leaning on a guy with my chin tucked between my gloves and he manages to squeeze in an uppercut between my gloves on my chin, it's not gonna hit with full force.

honestly, Pac and Khan have very different styles in my eyes.

Pacman's defense and offense are intertwined. He slips under a punch and goes right to work. He's constantly on the offense. It is a huge reason he's so hard to beat.
Khan takes more breaks, which is why its much more noticeable with him. Learning some more defense would help Kahn.

Agreed - love the fact that people at home are analysing Roach weaknesses as a coach and calling him out.

I beat Tiger Woods the other day, outputted him all the way down the home stretch but my ****in handicap is still 24 and he won't be calling me anytime soon for tips!

This is truly the playstation generation.

True statements, though I'd like to add:

Very contrasting fighters, despite being trained by the same guy.

Pacquiao is rarely on just offense or just defense. The style that he has developed in to is one that is constantly implementing defense. His defense sets up his offense, and sometimes his offense serves as a great defense.

Khan's natural style lends itself to defense as well. He is a lengthy, quick fighter, and therefore can use the "stickandmove" style, which is defensive minded, as it emphasises hitting without getting hit. His speed and movement make this possible. Those are defensive characteristics.

Neither one of these guys are easy to hit. I think they both have superb defense.

Khan really needs to work on that defence. From day one of his career he's never been particularly good with defence. Roach has made that aspect of his game better by giving him that high, tight guard, but it's still not enough. Khan needs to use better head/upper body movement (even though he's improved this area slightly since working with Roach).

I was particularly surprised at just how easy it was for Maidana to hit him with uppercuts. To be fair, the traditional guard DOES leave you open for that particular punch, as it comes from underneath and goes straight through the guard to the chin. Most fighters rely on people not throwing uppercuts at them, as it's the rarest punch out of all the basic attacks. Still, Khan could remedy this situation by moving. If he wants to take a breather on the ropes and put his guard up, blinding himself like that, then he should at least move his head as he does it. He should put that guard up and weave from side to side. That should make it more difficult to land uppercuts. What he's doing at the moment is just standing completely still and putting his gloves up.

I'm really surprised he even withstood that Maidana onslaught in the tenth round, to be honest -- he looked completely out on his feet for a moment, so I give him respect for digging deep and coming back later. I've never doubted Khan's heart or fighting instinct, though...we've seen plenty of it in his career. It's the defence that is worrying.

I must admit, I am now beginning to question Roach's ability to instil defensive qualities in his fighters.

I think part of it is that khan doesnt look from behind his guard, he puts his head down to he cant see which specific punch is coming, eg, an uppercut
