hey guys i just watched the K1 world heavyweight grand pre, which for you guys that dont know is the top tournment for kickboxing. so many great fighters gokhan saki, alistar oveerem, peter aerts, daniel gita etc very fun to watch and so before i say what i say, i will say i have boxed for about 12 years and also did a lot of grappling and some muay thai kickboxing, BUT YES OFCOURSE BOXING IS MY FAV.... all that being said. i watched this tournment and ones before it and its amazing the force and impact alot of these guys delivery when they punch.... i am not talking techique, because many of them espically the dutch have great hands they cant match boxers here, so forget about kicks or boxing techique, i am just talking about power and explosivness when you see some of hand a punch, you can just hear and see the force and how the even the speed is sometimes is awesome then i see guys chris arreora or adamek or etc and i kind doubt that they hit harder/more explosive then some of these k1 guys...... i am not talking who wins because usually the guy who is fighting under his rules wins, just about the power/explosive stuff
K-1 features the best hand strikers in the world outside of pro boxing (and vice versa). A lot of the best K-1 talents would probably be quite successful in boxing (particularly those who don't rely as much exclusively on kicks like Heart Jaideep). Giorgio Petrosyan springs to mind. Despite his MT background he has amazing hands and can virtually win with ease without lifting a leg. If Semmy Schilt had been developed as a boxer instead of a martial artist he could have matched up well with either Klitschko. FYI, for those who think this is another MMA vs. boxing rehash: K-1 is not "MMA", any more than boxing is. It is technically a mixture of a few martial arts - but they are all stand-up striking arts (all forms of kickboxing, really) and K-1 is extremely similar in spirit and rule structure to pro boxing and bears fairly little resemblance to the hybridized sport popularly known as "Mixed Martial Arts" which features a heavy emphasis on grappling and grounded fighting. As for pure punching power - yes. The top names in K-1 would be considered hard punchers in the boxing game. With the emphasis on knockouts (including profoundly increased financial compensation for scoring them, and the brevity of fights lending itself to pushing for a KO as a strategy) the cream rises to the top and most of those who are successful in K-1 have extremely heavy hands to go along with their finely tuned technical skills.
I promise you that Aerts would knock Arreola out cold (after grinning through all his best shots), even today at 40 years old.
the punches look harder becoz they´re often pushed instead of snapped. it looks more impressive, but if your punch is more thrown like a whip it´s much faster, precise and damaging.
I think k1 is a great sport as well, schilt could have been a good heavy, I think that tyrone spong could be a good boxer, overeem is a steroid guy I think and he gasses if he had to fight more rounds. Badr hari is a beast but has a china chin. Peter aerts is one tough brave man and i would never underestimate him, bonjasky had good movement and chin but he was better with his legs.
They are not even close with punching power with top boxers. If they are that good they will go to pro boxing because is much bigger money.Look at boxing fights of Mighty Mo or Ray Sefo with low level boxers.Ray Sefo never got knocked like he had in boxing fight and Mighty Mo looked very bad in boxing fight. And there is one important diferences in punch resistance. For example Overeem go down from one punch of Hari and how many punches had taken Shannon Briggs from Klitschko and not get down and i think that we all know that Vitali Klitschko punches is much harder than Budr Hari punches.
@intentional butt: i follow k1 events for over 10 years now, and i´m also a huge fan, although i like k1 max more from a technical standpoint. but you see, kick/thaiboxers try to push thru target, whereas good boxers snap. this is only generalized, and i didn´t want to offend you and your knowlegde:good
I wish boxing was more popular in Holland... We would probably have a few good HW's over here if they didn't all chose K1 and MMA.
Yeah where are all the dutch boxers? are there any pros who have done something at world level from Holland?
Not necessarily. If money was the only factor in what sport people chose, then you would have many more boxers take up golf, soccer, or even basketball. Why even take up sport, you know how much top movie stars and musicians earn over a career? Boxing and K1 kickboxing have some similiarities but also have many differences as well. Just like some fans will still stick to their passion of boxing, others may stick to their passion kickboxing.
There were in the past... Regilio Tuur was one of them, but he was so "smart" to retire in his prime and return to the scene when he was well past it. We had a few beltholders after that, but nothing special. Raymond Joval Eddy Smulders And don't forget the "Dutch Sonny Liston" Richel Hersisia, who lost KO4 to Audley Harrison
