Monzon by decision. He would be the great ring general that he was and never let Toney in the fight. I'm a fan of both but this has "Monzon win" written all over it. He's arguably the best MW that ever lived and if not he's up there.
Exactly, and don't let it be said that Toney couldn't be outfoxed...Monzon would have won on points over 15 rds IMO.
Toney would allow himself to be beaten on points by quite a margin. Toney is excellent but he's not in the Monzon-Hagler-Hopkins class.
This is pretty simple really. When comparing Toney to these Middleweights, just ask yourself, would Monzon, Hagler, or Hopkins need a gift decision against Dave Tiberi??? It's really unthinkable. Did any of these guys ever put on such a performance?? And yeah, I've heard all the weight drained excuses. Monzon was a large Middleweight. These guys were never weight drained or sick? No kidding, Toney is not in that class at Middleweight. Seriously.
this is a very intereswting match of styles. james toney is so smooth and relaxed in the ring it alsmost looks too easy at times. but against a giant middleweight with a great straight right i could see him losing a decision. it's that low left arm of toney's, monzon wouldnt land all of those straight rights but he would at least keep toney on defense, and would land some. for jt to get inside on monzon i would wanna give him a little aaron pryor or joe frazier. i would like to see him set a more frantic pace to keep monzon moving away instead of forward.
Monzon was indeed a master at controlling the distance. JT wouldn't be able to get inside to do his best work. He's not quite Roy Jones in the footspeed department. Monzon takes a comfortable UD.
Agree entirely. I've always had less regard for Toney than most of the posters here. Terribly inconsistent fighter as well as your point about his footwork. To give him some credit though his fights against Mccallum were a joy to behold.
I don't think Toney would beat Griffith or Benvenuti at 160. Hmmmmmm, well they'd be split decisions whoever won, though I wouldn't favour him. He'd take 1 of 3.
Monzon for me. He's not technical with it but he controls distance well and has multi-directional movement, a good jab and sense of range. All of these are good to go into a fight against Toney with. I seriously doubt Monzon's just going to walk over to Toney and get blitzed with counters for 12/15 rounds, therefore I agree with McGrain, Toney's chances are not serious.
Monzon is all wrong for him like he is for everyone at middle. Hard to beat. Monzon UD (and Toney is very capable of beating an ATG on a given day, but consistancy is not a strong suit...Monzon was always consistant)
Surprised by how many people are picking Toney to be honest. For me its clearly a Monzon win and I thought pretty much evreyone would share the same opinion. What I was really interested in was how many people picked Monzon by KO rather than points. Mind you I had just watched him execute Nino Benovetti and that influenced by thought. Thats seriously how it looked to me- a slow march to a broken Nino and a monster right hand that would knockout pretty much anyone.
