When would you have stopped the fight???

i reckon around 40 to but Sprott was in worse trouble than Ovil or Paul Smith after 10 secs.

 

The Bellew/McKenzie style stoppage is the type that angers me the most as its completely illogical.

When a fighter gets knocked down, the referee gives them a count and then makes an informed decision on whether they're fit to continue by looking into their eyes and pulling the gloves.

If he then decides to let the fight go on, he simply must be willing to give the fighter a real chance to recover. I get ****ing angry when they stop it after one punch is landed or one flurry that does not even land on the ropes after the knockdown. What the hell were they expecting, the fighter to completely recover in the space of 2 seconds?

 

In that clip ASAP aftet 40 seconds as possible.

Sprott was in a bad way after the 9 count and I wouldn't criticise a stoppage at that point. In between the count and the 40 second mark Sprott had at least kept moving, kept his hands up and not shipped any more big punches.

 

Do you think referees should have to have some ring experience themselves, would this help, surely it would when deciding a fighters capability of continuing. Fighters have to be saved from themselves, is it fair to say that only a former fighter would understand when enough was enough, I dont know.

 

I thought the stoppage was okay for a non-title go.
A tad premature, had it been for a title though.

 

Breland-Honeyghan, I think the commentators were wrong.
What they failed to see, that the referee obviously clocked, is that Lloyd was avoiding the vast majority of the punches.
Yes, he looked shot as hell, didn't punch back, and had no balance, and his punch resistance was shoddy, BUT he wasn't actually gettting hit by many shots at all.

 

Interesting debate, have seen some soft ones, McKenzie last week and some were the referee should have acted earlier, Maccarinelli - Frenkel. I think a lot depends on the referee himself and I actually think the refs stop half of these undercard bouts early to keep to the running schedule. In saying that, the fighters health is paramount and the referees have a difficult job to do and most of the time get it right. I think in that vid, Adam Smith (who is slightly irritating to listen to) is sensationalising the refs decision not to stop it early. I would hate if boxing descended into football style bitching about officials. Have a look at this one, it's highlights of an Irish Heavyweight clash early in the year between Coleman Barrett and Colin Kenna. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. Barrett wins comfortably on points but only after suffering a heavey knockdown in round 2 but gets up to just about see the round out. I remember thinking that maybe he was lucky he didn't get stopped at the very end of the round. What do you think? Round 2 starts at 1:44

It is a hard one.....

After the knock down he dident throw a punch, he was just continued to keep his guard up, and not many of those shots landed flush.

I think the referee stopped the Sprott fight at exactly the right time. If punches aren't landing cleanly then there's usually no need to stop it.

When commentators start calling for the fight to be stopped, I find it spoils the tension of the fight - fighters actually hurting each other and trying to hang on is the climax for most spectators. I've very rarely seen a modern-day fight that went on too long (the recent Maccarinelli fight is one example that everyone can agree on) but early stoppages are commonplace.

A ridiculously early stoppage like the one in Calzaghe-Manfredo should be regarded as an example of gross incompetence on the part of the referee.
