The inspirational effort Bernard Hopkins put forth against Jean Pascal on Saturday in Quebec City, Canada was not enough to lift THE RING light heavyweight title from the 18-years-younger champ to become the oldest fighter ever to win a major title but it was enough to vault the 45-year-old veteran to the No. 1 spot in the magazine’s 175-pound ratings.

Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 knockouts), who got up from two early round knockdowns and outworked Pascal to a controversial majority draw, had slipped to No. 4 in THE RING’s light heavyweight ratings following unimpressive outings against Enrique Ornelas and Roy Jones Jr.

However, with his gritty performance against Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs), a 2-to-1 favorite who beat then-No. 1 contender Chad Dawson for THE RING title in August, Hopkins more than made up for those two lackluster outings and reminded fans how special he is.

Well, officially it was a draw, yes. But in the eyes of many, Hopkins schooled him. That's the beautiful thing about boxing. The fans are the real judges, and it's they who determine who wins and loses the event.

Hmmm. I'm not saying he shouldn't be... but given the draw, this move on the Ring's part is as questionable as Ward moving up to #1 SMW after losing 3 clear rounds to the inferior Bika. American nut-huggery. :yep

I had 114-112 Hopkins, so I'll be the first Canadian in this thread to put forth the idea that he should have won an SD and legitimately claimed the #1 LHW spot. Anyhow, the result is fair as it is... close fight. I had it 104-103 BHop going into the 12th.

Edit: nevermind, thought the Ring made him #1 as in 'champ' lol.

Oscar owns the ring, therefore he can pick and choose who he wants there.

The Ring always has ridden Hopkins' ballsack. That's just what they do.

kind of unfair to give the ring in oscars hand knowing he has is own agenda with golden boy, takes a bit of the credibility away for me.

I think that getting a draw with the champ is good enough to earn him the #1 contender slot

Whats with the bitching here:huh ... He deserves that spot.
He gets a draw meaning he is on the same par as the champ... The champ stays champ and he gets the second best place and that is the nr1 contender slot...

The ring made a good move and some people are still complaining... Damn ! How can he be the no 1 contender after a draw ? Well, maybe because that draw was against the champ ? Can't be easier to understand.
