Zelenoff-Hartley- The "I paid him 200 bucks not to hit me in the face" gameplan really backfired.

 

What else was he going to do? He was terribly overmatched.

Alexander vs Kotelnik - Do the same exact thing in every single round, even though it is clearly not working at all.

 

Fair enough. But I don't know whether fighting like Oscar or Castillo did was really the blueprint to beating him. After all, Floyd adapted in both those fights and won [if we're taking Castillo II when fully-fit, I don't wanna get into a scoring debacle over the first fight again]. I felt that the gameplan was good to begin with. It was as simple as jabbing to the body where Floyd would block and leave himself open for that right hand upstairs. I mean it nearly worked as that's exactly what he did in round 2 when he had him rocked, but he got too carried away and winged in hooks after that and let Floyd hold on. From that moment onwards, Floyd changed his stance inviting him to do the same thing again because he knew he wasn't gonna get caught cold twice; everytime Mosley did try it thereafter he got countered, but he really had no plan B after that.

Hatton against Pac springs to mind straight away. Mayweather Snr didnt send him out like that, I think it was hattons arrogance in that he was supposedly the stronger man and the fact that he was shitting himself as well.

 

Yeah, that one springs to mind. I'm probably one of the few who thought Alexander won [I think a lot of his bodywork was ignored, and his work-rate and aggression was far higher, although Kotelnik did probably land the cleaner punches]. But yeah, all he did was stand at mid-range throwing power-punch combinations, it wasn't breaking Kotelnik down and he was doing the same thing over and over again, throwing right hooks, lead lefts, hooks to the body in 3's and 4's and they were mostly all being blocked.

Pascal against Hopkins was another stupid one. Up against a 45 year old - 17 years his senior - and he never went to the body and threw 20 punches a round. Christ he's dumb.

 

I don't feel Floyd was convincing enough in either Castillo fight or the Oscar fight in order to prove that approach is not the best one to follow. He lost the first Castillo fight, ran to win the second one and only succeeded because JLC doesn't have the footspeed to catch him when he's in full flight mode, and he was fortunate that Oscar tired down the stretch because Oscar's gameplan was working when he was still energetic.

Although I feel Floyd is overrated, I am still aware that he has extremely fast hands when firing single shots and a superb defence, so I think for more or less anyone to take him on in the centre of the ring is pretty stupid. Maybe if you are far bigger and more potent physically that may be a worthwhile approach, or if you have longer arms and a proven world-class jab it could bring some success, but for a fighter like Shane Mosley to fight someone with faster hands and a much, much better defence in centre-ring and never try to change it up is borderline ******ed IMO.

It nearly worked though, that's the point. The 'jab to the body, come upstairs with the right hand' gameplan had him floored in the second, more than we've ever seen him floored in his career before, and who knows what would have happened if Mosley didn't throw cuffing hooks and let Floyd hold on?

Could Mosley have carried out a pressure-type style like Castillo or Oscar did though? Mayweather seemed content to stand his ground with Mosley and never once backed off and circled around the ring. He seemed like the stronger guy in there and therefore seemed fine with standing in the centre of the ring and not bothered by Shane looking to open up at mid-range or inside.
