I know you have to rate them highly... But watching Michael Nunn (arguably the most talented boxer above the lighter weights of the 80s and 90s) struggle so difficultly with Iran Barkley and Graciano Rocchigiani (certainly no shame).... and then watching Nigel blow Barkley out in a single round in his backyard and Chris completely dominate Rocchigiani in his backyard, it kind of puts things into an impressive perspective when you watch those four fights like I just have. Let's also not forget Barkley knocked (the ****) out and out-pointed Tommy Hearns and Rocchigiani was flat-out robbed against both Maske and Michalczewski. Nigel & Chris were so impressive against those guys, those guys two of the hardest, strongest, toughest guys and winners of multiple major world belts.
I am not sure if most Brits underrate them, i love them both and they are national treasures. They are certainly underrated on the world stage though, 99% of yanks think Benn or Eubank vs Hopkins, Jones and Toney are uncompetetive mismatches.
I don't think any Brit will under rate any of the two. In fact about 4 of my mates were talking about these two the other week in flattering terms. If anything it would be the Yanks that underrate them, Eubank was laughed at and Benn was considered another chinny Brit!!
Nunn is actually a wee bit overrated IMO. If you see him on the route to Toney, he was awesome, but was built-up much in the way we see fighters done today, and fighters out of their primes and out of their best weight class. His win over Kalambay was an absolute fluke. Fair play to him, but that would've happened literally once out of a hundred meetings between the two, Nunn was not a big puncher. Thing with Eubank is, he got a few dodgy decisions, but I think his persona turns a lot of people off. I love the guy, he was clearly from the American school, slick as **** and could really bang when he wanted too (as well as having an ATG chin of course) Benn is really well-loved IMO. I think they are both given their dues in a fair and balanced way, for me though, Watson was the most well-rounded. I'd rate both of them over Nunn, for sure, as talented as he was. He competed well against Toney until the better fighter pulled it out. I hear it said a lot that Nunn was schooling Toney until then, but I don't agree; as I've said before, 'Gentleman' Jim Corbett once said 'in boxing there is no such thing as a chance blow'. Toney was just the better fighter (and would've beaten all of our boys IMO)
They were both brilliant but if anything, I think they're overrated by Brits compared to Steve Collins who beat them both twice.
Steve Collins got them both at the end of their careers. Prime for prime I'd fancy them both over Collins.
Benn is the man, simple. Easily my favourite ever british fighter. He had the heart of a lion and was a spiteful **** when he had to be.
Also Eubank was a bit unlucky in the 1st match was Collins. Heard Collins gave Eubank a hiding in the 2nd though. Benn was beyond shot in his fights against Collins. If you find anyone who thinks otherwise tell them I've a beach front property in Arizona Bay I want to shift.
We at times probably slightly overrate them though they were both very good fighters. In terms of world recognition they are underrated
Collins, Eubank and Benn were all at a similar age and point in their careers when they fought, Collins beat them both convincingly, twice each...thats not to take anything from either Benn or Eubank, they were both great...Collins just had both their numbers
atsch Lewis and Tyson were a similar age when they fought, as were Calzaghe and Jones....in both cases one was at somewhere around their peak while the other was shot to ****. A pre-Watson Eubank would have finished Collins when he had him hurt in the first fight. Collins was a great fighter, and would have given peak versions of both men a great fight, but some of the Irish need to take off their pro paddy / anti English blinkers off when talking about him
They were not at the same stage in their careers. They may have been a similar age, but in ring terms they were not. Watch Benn during and prior McClellan and say he was anything like the man after. Eubank was stopping most prior to Watson, how many after ? Eubank had how many title fights before he fought Collins ? He was winding down. Benn left 90% of the dark destroyer in the ring against the G Man.
No way man. Fair play to Nunn, he summoned something that not even Kalambay saw coming. But Kalambay was the greater fighter and I think on a different night he'd win handily. Then again, you know I'm a massive admirer of Sumbu :good And yes, Toney would have beaten all of ur boys IMO. Eubank would've given the most hassle IMO.
