Watching Collins-Kalambay, it's just a better Calzaghe-Hopkins. And if the judges of the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight judged Collins-Kalambay, there's little doubt Steve would've had that decision. Reggie Johnson in '92 was infinite better than Brewer and Mitchell (or Lacy or '08 Jones), or even Kessler. Collins was very unlucky not get that dec. Tony Thornton was half a notch over the likes of Brewer and Mitchell, and Pyatt, Watts and Seiller better than 95+% of Joe's opponents. Benn infinite more dangerous than Reid or Woodhall, and different class of animal. Remember Collins clearly won 11 out of 12 rounds against Eubank in their 2nd fight, and went 12 with a peak McCallum at 25 as a 16-fight novice.
Forget resumes, a prime Calzaghe vs Collins in ring and i would choose Calzaghe to win every time by UD in a close fight. But Collins did beat a prime Eubank TWICE. Collins will always outwork a prime Benn not knock him but out work him to a UD, a prime Benn wouldnt put a dent in a prime Collins, were not talking about a sick Mcclellan here but Iron-jawed Collins! no way Benn beats him.....
Nonsense, it was a broadly similar fight as far as styles go but Kalambay was much better against Collins than Hopkins was against Calzaghe. that said, i think Collins vs Calzaghe would probably be very close.Calzaghe is hardly going to cleanly outbox him, not even close.it would be an ugly maulfest with Calzaghe's faster hands giving him the edge.
There i alot of debate about what year Collins wa in his prime. I think it's hard to say. I actually think all 4 of Collins, Calzahge, Eubank and Benn would be capable of beating any of today's BUTE/Froch/Ward/Direll but maybe I'm being harsh on the current generation.
Collins was a lot better then people realise IMO- that said Calzghe was on another level on his best day,.
I did'nt think Collins was unlucky to lose to Reggie Johnson, he fought gallantly, but from what I recall, Reggie was actually hurting him toward the end of the fight.
Collins does not get the recognition he deserves. As for him v Calzaghe we'll never know but I would be interested in having a quiet pint with Chris Eubank and hearing what he has to say.
Collins was/is incredibly underrated. All that hypnotist stuff has overshadowed his ability and toughness, and given the impression that he was some mad Irish man with red hair tearing about the ring without much thought.
