Joe Calzaghe vs Antonio Tarver

if a roy jones jr who spends more time poking his tongue out than punching was close to stopping tarver, and a weight drained roy joness put tarver into his shell just by not laying on the ropes for like 2 rounds of their 1st fight

and glen johnson beat him just with volume and no gameplan

and b hop took his heart

then calzaghe aint gunna get caught on the ropes, tarver is **** in the middle of the ring, calzaghe will beat that ass

it was meant in terms of his defence

u know when joe either punches or slaps 1000 times a fight

u think tarver is gunna out box him or out slug him?

 

Milkdud asks a few questions of Joe..mainly due to his ranginess and counterpunching ability.

It's conceivable Joe has a real tough time with that..because he never faced anyone like Tarver really.

But I tend to picture JC's footspeed and stamina being to much for Antonio. 8-4'ish decision I reckon.

 

If Antonio closed his eyes and swung for the homerun punch and landed..sure he would hurt Joe, he would hurt just about anyone.

But I just really don't think he lands to many of those shots, they are low percentage shots. Joe did have a pretty good chin and very good recuperative powers. AT is just, I think, to slow in this one. Now he does know how to use his height and he is solid technically, so he can make up for that speed deficiency with those.
But Joe adapts to the situation and fights the right fight, he should use his footspeed to frustrate Tarver...and his workrate gets him the rounds.
Another issue for Antonio in this one is that he gasses and isn't nearly as consistent with his punching as Joe. He might trouble Joe is spurts but overall I cant see it being enough to get the verdict in the end.

His best chance is that hailmary punch...but thats not always going to come off.

I certainly do not think Joe stops him or even gets close..and I dont think Joe would be able to dominate him overall, just at best probably give the impression he is by throwing and landing 2-1 against him.

It's a good fight...Antonio at his best was a pretty good fighter but I reckon Joe's better and matches better because of the reasons all ready covered.

 

Tbh i dont see how anyone can say EITHER gets stopped in their prime. Their is no evidence or precedence to say or show it.

Joe would clearly beat Tarver.
People want to point tha Calzaghe got put down against Jones and Hopkins, but lets get the facts right. Calzaghe was up well in time, not hurt or looking to hold and was the fighter that got up and threw the punches. In boxing people do get put down, it happens, Dawson, Ward, Dirrell, Hopkins all got put down by journeymen, so does tha say they would have lost had those journeymen been at different stages in their careers? Of course not. Its getting up and winning that counts and that is what Calzaghe did every single time :smoke.
Remember that Tarver lost to Hopkins that Calzaghe beat , as well as Harding and double figure losses Johnson who loses most times he steps up. That loss to Dawson looks worse than ever.
When Calzaghe got up against Hopkins, one of the scorecards was the widest against Hopkins ever, and Hopkins got hit with more shots than ever. Sure Calzaghe did flap at times but he also landed the more solid shots more often

Clear easy Calzaghe win.

America has to learn to live with the fact that Calzaghe beat Hopkins and Jones, and was never beaten.
I suppose they get some comfort coming onto fantasy match ups to try and find someone who can beat him, but they still fail :smoke

 

Good post. Everyone always comments on people walking through Joe's slaps. The reality is...it never ever happened. He sat down on the odd punch and kept opponents where he wanted by doing that. Tarver was a B class fighter, he is not in the same league as RJJ, Nard or Joe end of.

I didn´t really enjoy watching JC nor I like Hopkins. RJ was pleasure to watcn in the 90's. But that dosen't meen a thing when we compare who beats who. JC was very special and I would never compare him to Tarver. I realise why people have hard time to accept JC legacy; he beat all the U.S greats Jones and Hopkins and had 0 on his record. JC just born in a wrong Country to have his credit in US.

Btw. There is some talk that Hopkins is again best LHW. Tarver, Pascal, Dawson etc are all big underdogs against JC like Hopkins.

 

Tarver is simply not tough enough to handle Calzaghe.

It's quite obvious that he fought Roy Jones who could be beaten by any LHW with a pulse at that point and retired instead of fighting Dawson and also ducked a rematch with a 44 year old Hopkins. He arguably lost to a old Hopkins which is sad when you're 36.

People that talk about Calzaghe's early career sound ******ed, the guy was fighting a bunch of bums early in his career, the best win of his career is Hopkins who was 43 while Joe was 36, that's pathetic.

Go watch a young Roy Jones Jr. beat Hopkins and Toney like they're school children.
