Nice highlight....i wonder what this guy does now? Last i heard he was working as a doorman i think...
it sucks that he is a doorman now, That punch he dropped holmes with was amazing I was very surprised that he came up, also Ali handled some brutal shots
Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first time I saw Earnie fight, was back on December 12, 1970 at Madison Square Graden. on the Ali vs. Bonavena undercard. Nearly killed Herman 'Bunky' Akins with a monsterous overhand right. 'KO 1' Akins, 5-0-0 (5 KO's) was 'highly touted' and a pretty good fighter from the 'west coast'. Never saw anybody hit that hard. KO 1 'Bunky' was out for 5-minutes!
Is he still working there? Next time im down in Liverpool, I might jus have to go see him...bet he'd have some storys to tell!
I just read on boxrec that was Akins last fight.I would love to see some of early Shavers fight. You are happy man to saw that fight.
Earnie had 'hair' back then,,,,,,,,,,,and didn't look like an awesome bomber. 'Bunky' Akins was labeled as 'can't miss prospect'........Earnie sure didn't miss him!!!
Brilliant highlight reel... and what a smashing man. I get the feeling most of those fights from this era would be stopped way sooner if they were fought in current times.
No idea man. My mate told me about it, I don't know from first-hand experience or anything about it other than hearsay.
A hell of a bomber in the greatest era in HW boxing. And in every interview I've seen, he seems like a very, very cool guy - a humble, decent human being. And without question, the funniest quotes in the history of boxing are fighters talking about how it felt to get hit by Shavers. How the f*ck did Ali survive those concussive shots, or Holmes, or Tillis?
It is pretty obvious, that the right hand bombs that Earnie Shavers hit an aged Muhammad Ali with caused ireparable damage. Just how did Earnie lose to Bob Stallings,,,,,,,,,,,thats one for the bookworms!
