    [url]Bennie Briscoe passes[/url]


    Bennie Briscoe, one of the best never to win a world title (when world titles meant something) and the man who presided over the last Golden Age of Boxing in Philadelphia (the 1970s) passed away today at 5.52pm EST. He had been in Temple University hospital for about a week before being moved to hospice. His wife Karen, who I have been in contact with over the last two weeks, called my at about 6.20pm EST to give me the news

    A true all-timer without belt credentials. With the cred of Bennie you didn't need that belt. This is a painful day.

    A tough tough fighter, many of the greatest names from the 7o s who have shared the ring with him was in awe of his toughness and power.

    A sad day for his family and the world of boxing.

    RIP Bad Bennie. A true tough guy who gave the great Monzon a couple of good rumbles. There's a photo on the web of Monzon reeling after being hit by Bennie, although Carlos went on to win the decision. And he held Monzon to a draw in their first fight!
