Mental game in boxing is pure BS. If your weak mentally then you dont have any business stepping inside the boxing ring.
That goes under the mental part of the game ... but u seem like u wanna take ur vote back... is that the case? If so, why the change of heart?
i voted mental because on the pros everybody is or should be in the best possible shape ever and it's usually the fighter with the better boxing brain that wins. of course there are exceptions.
If your taking this concept to the extreme as most people are in this thread than no matter how gifted you are physically if you dont have the mental strength or dedication to train you wont be getting far. Sure you may look spectacular for the round or two but after that you might get stopped. I also think the physical element of the sport is defined too widely here. You wont be last long in a ring without top conditioning especially at the elite level. Some would say that zab judah has better physical tools than mayweather. Sure he may be faster and you could say he hits harder but mayweather has more stamina. You cant just be born with stamina because it takes alot of training to build gas tanks like that. Would manny pacquiao be able to fight the way he does without his dedication to preaparing for the fight?
But on the flipside floyd had advantages in stamina, reflexes and accuracy ... so the mental part became the difference when both fighters were basicly evenly matched physically ... but then u have a fighter like Mickey Ward .. who is arguably one of the toughest in the game yet does nothing special ... and he gets his ears boxed off by none other than Zab Judah
training effects the body more the mind ... if a fighter in the elite level decides not to train before a fight I guarantee is because he is confident that he doesn't need it ... so mentaly he's ready ... but how do u think he's going to perform on fight night? ... his body isn't prepared to deal with the punishment of not only taking punches but dishing them out ... Why do u think we have weight classes ... cuz fighter A is too big for fighter B .. so we need to even the playing field ... cuz no matter how good or mentally tough fighter B is, the PHYSICAL ADVANTAGE is overwhelming. Picture this fighter A ... 6'3 175lbs .. fighter B 5'6 126lbs ... both have the same style... both share a record of 30-0 with 26 kos ... but fighter b is mentally stronger ... who u pickin?
I disagree. If you don't have the mentality for boxing? You will quit the first time you spar and get your butt kicked. If you are game enough to come back? You are game enough to fight. Now you start learning your craft and honing your body to ply your craft. The ONLY time a guys "mentality" gets exposed again is when his body begins to fail him. That can either be from stamina or pain tolerance. How is that mental? Nobody cracks "mentally" in the first round. Why? Their body isn't failing them.
Excellent reply.. Take two guys off the street, one mentally stable klutz, and one very crazy, but athletically gifted guy... Which guy would you rather train, that could go far ... To me i'm talking about natural athleticism... things you're born with..
Is this some kind of comparing a 'boxer' vs a 'swarmer' of some sort? One being smarter in the ring/does more thinking, and the other relies more on body/less thinking?
Sean O Grady once said, " anyone can get into shape (physical) not anybody can fight (mental). One compliments the other. There are a lot of young, physical specimens out there, in the UFC for one, why don't they cross over to boxing. Limited skills, boxing skills can be overcome by mental toughness, determination and fortitude. We see that in Manny. Who would have thought looking at his early fights that he would wind up where he is today. A prime, physically gifted fighter with the right mental attitude is a formidable opponent to face.
Mental. There are some guys who can learn new techniques and get into the best shape, but they still won't be good fighters. If you ever been training at a boxing gym, you would have seen it firsthand.
