so i been training almost 3 years at a boxing gym:bbb, but the more i learn about boxing, the more i think the training we do is outdated. My boxing gym has been running since 1948, and i don't think they have changed up their work out regime since. We do the same things, run circles in a tiny area with tight corners, that cause my feet insane blisters. Technically they dont teach a whole lot, jab jab jab, keep your hands up, thats about it.. I ussually spar with really small guys or really big guys:bart, and its not controlled sparring, its like prove yourself almost a fight sparring. I did most my technical learning via youtube and other videos. So is it disrespectful to switch to another gym because i was there for 3 years, all the other guys are all committed to that gym 110%, with tattoos of their logo and stuff, so i feel like i should be, at the same time im wanting to be the best boxer i can be, and honestly i dont think this gym is helping, respect vs wanting to learn more. Sorry so long.
How sad. How old are these guys? There's nothing wrong with switching gyms, the place sounds like a shithole with awful trainers anyway. No offence.
Not disrespectful at all, especially if you are learning technical stuff off of U-Tube, then it is definitely time to find a new gym. I've seen a lot of those u-tube videos and most of it is pure bull**** brought to you by some "wanna-be" poser. Look around, talk to some of the guys at various gyms to get their take on how their training is going and go from there.
The more gyms the merrier. Always good to get fresh perspectives. My current gym is a lot like what you describe, except no tattoos of our logo (we don't have one) and there's only about 2 or 3 guys who go there regularly. Maybe 5 guys there total on a good night. The training is more pro-oriented...lots and lots and lots of roadwork and rounds, not too much technical work except a pointer here and there.
Some trainers and gyms might find it disrespectful, especially if you've been competing out of their gym, but if it's as bad as you say, switch! Got to do whats best for you man.
If you aren't benefiting from being there and that's about all they can teach you, then by all means change it up.
I swear that everything that you're saying sounds just like the same situation that I've been in for the past 8 months. The only difference is that I probably learn more in my sparring sessions than you probably do because my coach does suprisingly teach us some stuff when sparring, but everything else sounds about the same. My advice to you would be to switch gyms ASAP. You should consider yourself lucky to be in a position to do something like that. You could live in a small town like me and only have one boxing gym around, which forces you to stay at that gym if you want to box at all.
i've had the eight coaches in the past ten years. each coach gave me something new and one coach I had last year was the best. if you are improving with one coach than don't move around. however, if your progress is not improving than i suggest trying something else. feel bad for a couple days and especially at the tournaments when you see them. no disrespect to the coaches. they put a lot of time into each boxer and they take leaving very rough. since the gyms compete against each other coaches tend to get territorial with some of the boxers especially if the boxer is one of the good ones in the gym. don't take it personally if the coach acts inapproapriate when you tell him you are leaving. just make sure its the right decision before you tell him because going back his harder than leaving.
I recently switched too, I know it feels like you're a traitor.. but think of it this way. You have to look out for yourself, if your gym isn't working for you then you need to move and expand.
switch. id be pissed if another coach approched one of my boys to change gyms but your leaving on your owe back..she be all good.by the sounds of it youll be a much better boxer for it dont know how you stay there that long if thats all they teach & they sparring is the way it is. SWITCH.
