(1) Hatton's win over Tszyu OR (2) Calzaghe's win over Hopkins Thought we could discuss this, since the dust has had time to settle on these results. Tszyu and Hopkins, both P-4-P top 5 at the time if I recollect correctly. Tszyu had just come off a win against the No.1 contendor in the LWW division, in Sharmba Mitchell. Hopkins had just had back-2-back victories against Tarver (then divisional No.1) and Winky Wright. Hatton had the more conclusive victory, what with the stoppage. IMO Calzaghe won pretty clearly against Hop, although I know some disagree.:hey Hatton was at home, Calzaghe was away. People thought the ref in the Tszyu fight was a bit pro-Hatton, while others think the ref in the Calzaghe fight was a bit pro-Hopkins. Tszyu retired after his fight, but Hopkins has continued to show that he is no pushover with his performance against Pascal. Was there a significant style advantage for either Hatton or Calzaghe in their respective fights? So taking everything into account, which was the more impressive victory?:think
I'd say Hatton's. Joe had the activity to beat Hopkins. Although saying that I probably went with Hopkins at the time Hatton from what I remember was giving almost no chance with Kostya. I think Hopkins was the better fighter but Ricky had the bigger task for the fights.
Calzaghe's win is quite a bit better. Moving up in weight, fighting abroad with a "biased" ref. Then taking into account that KT retired afterwards, which was a shame really and that Hopkins would embarrass Pavlik 6 months after his defeat and he's still going strong. On top of that, Hatton peaked against KT, while Calzaghe was on the slide fighting a Hopkins.
Calzaghe's I'd say. In the grand scheme of things Bernard is the much better fight and he's shown since he wasn't past it. Hatton's was still a very good win.
Hatton won, so....... :hey Nah, I find it hard to split them. The fact that Hatton was given next to no chance vs the fact that Hopkins went on to tool Pavlik and Pascal :think
Whats the question? Better performance or better win? Hatton performed better against Tszyu than Joe did against Hopkins, but Hopkins is a better fighter than Tszyu so Calzaghe has the better win.
I go with Calzaghe myself. It wasn't as conclusive a victory as Hatton's, but in hindsight Hopkins is a much bigger scalp than Tszyu (a very good fighter in his own right). Plus it was away from home, and Joe Cortez seemed to be getting in the way a lot.
Joe Calzaghe over Bernard Hopkins..... Anybody who thinks Bernard Hopkins won.....are complete ******s.
Thing is KT was finished at the time of Hatton but JC fought BHOP who still had something left. If both fought prime v prime against KT and BHOP i'd say JC still wins but Hatton doesn't.
hatton ill also like to point out that calzaghe didnt beat hopkins , he got the decision but he didnt win:smoke
Who landed the most punches...? Joe Calzaghe Who was running all night, and holding...? Bernard Hopkins.
Legacy wise its Calzaghe Hopkins by a mile but i think Hattons performance as more impressive and more of a shock win whereas Calzaghe was expected to win
At the time of Hops-Calzaghe I thought Hatton victory ovr Zoo was comfortably the more impressive but as Hops keeps kicking arse and Calzaghe got his win away from home I know think JCs is the more impressive win. The only caveat is that Calzaghe had the style to beat Hopkins in the same way Taylor did whereas Zoo's style was seen to be a bit of a nightmare for Hatton, so style wise Hatton probably had more to do/ less to work with, but still I'll go with Calzaghe.
Zoo was stiff, and was abit of a static fighter at times. It was simple for Ricky Hatton........"Walk forward and go ape****"
