why is a fighter's '0' so important nowadays...?

back in the day, great fighters were pitted against similarly gifted competitors, and if they lost,so what?so long as they showed heart and gave the fans a show, they could come back another day and still get a crack at a meaningful title.nowadays, you lose a fight,or heaven forbid,2,you're pretty much ****ed.the likes of old timers such as robinson/lamotta et al would've been demoted to small hall 8 rounders if they'd been around in the modern era,so ridiculous is the need to never lose under any circumstance.this is the reason that fighters at the top of the tree are given hand picked opponents all the time, and we,the fans, rarely get to see the fights we all want, just because a fighter's marquee value is reduced so much should they ever lose against a decent match up.domestically(in the uk,)this meant that hatton v witter was never made, even though either fighter should have been able to move forward in the event of a beating.i believe this is a major factor in boxing's general decline-the public feel cheated, and the sport ought to take a leaf out of the mma tourneys, where a defeat isn't a career ender.

  2. It's not important nowadays. It's important for one person only.

Since Sven Ottke's rise to the top pound for pound spot of all time people want to follow his example and achievements.

    All roads lead to Ottke.

fans have to take some of the blame in boxing these days you win a couple of fights your a world beater if you looses a couple your a bum or youve been exposed so alot of times fighters dont want to take risks neither do promoters if there fighter looses a couple of fights fans loose interest

david big nose haye is a great example of a protected fighter who has overachieved.he clearly doesn't want to fight the klits(he'll get battered)so makes a big noise to keep in the public eye and put bums on seats.i'd love to see herbie hide move back up to hw and spank him in london.i wouldn't be surprised to see chagaev put him over, either.these guys talk the talk, but are too afraid to walk the walk.

Here's a somewhat random short list of fighters who suffered losses before they ever won a world title.

Denny Moyer: first ever undisputed champ at 154. Had 8 losses before he won a world title.

Alexis Arguello: lost his first pro fight, and his first title fight.

Bernard Hopkins: lost his first pro fight and his first title fight.

Danny "Little Red" Lopez: Lost 3 fights before he won a world title. Now a Hall of fame featherweight champ.

Marvin Haglar: Two losses and a draw before he won a world title.

The "one and done" attitude we see now days is total bull****. It is also the reason some really good fighters, like David "The Destroyer" Lopez, can't get big fights.

Because boxing fans are more fickle than ever. A guy can't even be stunned in a fight nowadays without be labeled with a glass chin.

It is more important now than ever because fighters who have a legit or HOF career will still only have 5 or less "HOF fights" and 10 or so cupcake contenders. Also, being that fighters don't fight nearly as often and since one loss is considered to be the end of the world, it is more important.

    X 2

It is frustrating. Overnight, Chad Dawson and Paul Williams became "exposed American bums."

However, I believe it shows that the "0" is more important now than ever.

because fans suck and lable a guy shot once he loses a fight. I dont believe cotto/kahn/jacobs or even paul williams are shot. watch k1 for example topguys get knocked the **** out by others and a year later they win in similiar brutal fashion. Its mostly mental it gets in a fighters had. Roy jones who is shot got destroyed mentally as well.
Loses dont matter that much as people and especially floyd thinks, its accomplishments and how you come back that matter, look what ali did after frazier 1, leonard after duran 1 or pac after 2 ko's. It means little.

sure,he has the single loss.he got owned by an ageing carl thompson-a man he was supposed to demolish in 3 rounds.unfortunately for big nose, thompson never read the script, and as a result, haye has been carefully manoevoured ever since.he has subsequently been fed smaller cruisers and washed up heavys to feast on.put him in with a serious fighter and his chin will get smashed.again.same goes for khan.mark my words, they won't be throwing him in with another maidana any time soon.an ancient morales is a far more attractive proposition, any day.

Boxing fans being so fast to write fighters off is a big reason why we don't get to see all of the fights we want to see. Most boxers nowadays feel like they have to milk every cent that they can out of their careers before they lose. It's sad really... losing and recovering from that loss is part of what makes a great boxer.
