Ali vs Stevenson or Tyson vs Felix Savon. Which would have been the bigger event!

I'm going with Savon. The guy went through and dropped alot of top american fighters in the amateurs. Fighters like Tua, Briggs, Brewster etc... just off the top my head. Though I think Tyson would of destroyed him at that time, it would of been fun to see.

 

A reigning champion and ATG vs. someone making their pro debut is a mismatch every time. I don't care how decorated an amateur that someone is.

 

Anything involving Muhammad Ali would have been a huge event and I don't think Mike Tyson and Felix Savon which would have been an enormous attraction in its own right could compete.

Both fights are great from a fantasy perspective but from a reality perspective neither Cuban would have stood a chance against Ali and Tyson.

More than not the Cubans in the Amateur system are for the most part grown men fighting underdeveloped teenagers. "Super" Mario Kendelen was nearly thirty years old when he faced a seventeen year old Amir Khan, realistically thats a grown man fighting a child, and in the Olympic system a lot of Eastern European countries and Cubans have done this for years.

Personally I think when matched with another adult male who's developed physically its a whole different atmosphere, check Guillermo Rigondeaux's last fight. Savon and Stevenson would have had to deal with a tougher opponent for a longer amount of time, I don't care how many rounds you've sparred or medels you've won both of those guys would have gotten stopped.

Ali - Stevenson...
Not only because of Ali's name, but also because of the political situation of that moment.
The Tyson after Savon's second gold medal wasn't quite the beast anymore as he was in the late 80's and had lost some of his shine.

I agree, both pro's would have won.

I think it goes without saying who would have won each bout.

I'm sort of inclined to say Mike - Savon is the bigger of the two bouts, just because Ali was all but done by 77' and Mike was going through the Holyfield duet at the time when his popularity was sky high and he had more to give than Ali at those respective stages of their careers. It is a really hard one to judge to be honest, being unborn in 77' and only 6/7 in 96' means I can't really put it into too much perspective.

 

Ali vs Stevenson. Stevenson was the first "big" man to have serious skills. He was the prototype of Lewis, Bowe, and the Klitschko's. Where Stevenson falls short is because he never fought as a pro he was never truly tested and his greatness will always be questioned, at least in the pro ranks.

 

Just to set the record straight, Cubans win their first Olympics, World Championships, etc.. when they are on their teens, what happens is that they stay longer because the system doesn't have Professional sports, stop this BS, they paid their dues when young, so get the facts right.

 

Agree, but he did have the skills, and a heck of right hand, the first truly big man in the HW's.
