Julian Jackson vs Sergio Martinez

This is the kind of thread kotf makes.

Jackson by KO. Martinez's power is getting overrated here. Jackson may have shaky whiskers but he ain't no blownup welterweigh that throws punches carelessly without looking.

Sergio wouldn't be fighting this to go toe to toe with Jackson.
Sergio doesn't tend to get sloppy during fights and he's able to adjust pretty well during fights too.

Don't just watch the KO reel of Jackson and think it's a slam dunk for him. There were fights of Jackson where he was getting thoroughly outboxed only to find a home for a hard shot.... like with Herol Graham.
Graham was whooping Jackson in the rounds prior to the KO. Graham got over confident and sloppy and that's why he lost.

In Sergio's big fights he rarely gets sloppy. Even when he's tired he's still being more cautious than all out.

Not sloppy in the sense that you're going to land at will on the guy.

Awkward isn't sloppy.

 

True. I don't expect Jackson would land at will. I just don't expect he wouldn't land.

Not always. I don't see Martinez as the awkward, slick boxer that everyone paints him out as, though. He's more of an awkward, pot-shotting spoiler type.

Him beating Jackson isn't an impossibility, I just wouldn't favor it to happen.

 

Every time I turn around Bujia is hatin' on Martinez.

 

Martinez does have an 'Argentinian jaw' though he may take a few too many shots.

Jackson is unusual because he was a very talented puncher. Most knockout artists rely on sheer power but he put his shots together better than most guys during the time. Really good offensive fighter, and that's not even touching on his immense power. When you combine his punching ability and technique, with his raw power, there's not that many guys ever who rank above him. He's top 10 all-time.

Martinez is good but taking Pavlik's and Cintron's shots are one thing. Taking Jackson's is another altogether.

Martinez is too hittable for somebody with Jackson's power. And power isn't all that Jackson had - he was skilled and had nice technique. Better in those two categories than Martinez from what I've seen.

 

God, Jackson calmly weathered PRIME Terry Norris blitzkrieg and proceeded to time him with a beautiful right that would have knocked out a bull. I say this with respect because Sergios a classy dude (good fighter) but hes not close to the skill that Norris possessed.

Watch and see if Martinez is comparable to Norris.

I'd give Jackson a 60-40 edge or maybe even 65-35. Solid favorite, but Serg is a live dog to pull off an upset. I would consider it an upset, though.

 

I agree with that. I'm a huge Jackson fan. Probably one of the hardest punchers at 154 I ever seen. I remember Tyson sitting in on a HBO broadcast in what im guessing was like 1989. He kept on commenting on how powerful Jackson was, and that he believed he punched as hard as a heavyweight. He finished off by saying punchers like that are born, not made.

 

:good I have to agree with that...I do think there's ways for guys to develop their punching power over time (and working on accuracy/timing enough to get the most out of it certainly doesn't hurt), but Jackson's power was so freakish that I don't think anyone could just replicate it no matter how much they trained to. Training can help you reach your top potential, but the guys who have the potential to be close to the same league on Jackson from a P4P level of power are rare. Promoters would kill to have a ready supply of fighters with that kind of power, and if they were easy to find, we'd see alot more of them.
