http://www.datruthboxing.com/blog.cfm/post/winky-wright-returns-april-9th/ I smell an upset...Wright is 40 years old and hasnt had a fight in 2 years was a solid guy for years but I just think he's done....I think Macklin will win this one.
Its not going to be an upset if macklin wins....the bookies are gonna have mack as favourite. Macklin wont be beating winky wright, hel be beating up some old man who cant do ****.
I don't think that Macklin is half as good as sections of the media seem to think he is. He talks about world titles but he has not yet beaten all the top UK guys, so can't even call himself best domestically and back it up. He took the Winky Wright fight as it is a big name that he feels will move him closer to a world title, while also being a big enough name that Macklin feels he can justify ducking the top domestic guys, like Darren Barker. Whatever people think of Barker, he had to vacate the European Middleweight title through injury, and that is the only reason that Macklin got a soft shot at the belt. Barker was supposed to be mandatory on his recovery from injury, but Macklin is doing all he can to dig up a name from somewhere so he can avoid his obligation. I think Macklin will beat Wright, but only for the reasons that others in this thread have cited. Waste of time fight from a fan perspective. If Macklin wants to claim that he is the best then he should fight top guys from his own generation.
Agreed, to a point, although Macklin ought to be so much fresher and quicker than the current version of Winky that there is a limit to what it can prove. I guess if Macklin loses then we clearly see that he is not world level, but I expect that Darren Barker feels that he could show us that! But I take your point. Just also feel that Macklin would have got to international title level sooner if he were as good as his team seem to think he is. He only got the European strap late Summer last year, I believe, and that softly. But yes, this is a better matchup than some he might have considered.
Correct me if I am wrong, but did Macklin and Barker not have a fight scheduled where Barker withdrew during the buildup due to injury? So the timeline is: Barker vacated the euro belt due to injury, Macklin wins the euro belt, then macklin and barker schedule to fight and barker withdraws because of injury. And Macklin in ducking Barker how?! How could anyone blame Macklin for taking a fight against the still well recognised and respected Wright? A win there actually catapults him on to the world scene - whereas a win against Barker consolidates his position as euro champ. Anyone with even a little boxing savvy understands why Macklin takes winky ahead of Barker.
Winky should have a lot of money saved up, I dont know why he is still doing this. Id still like to see him face sturm, how good is sturm these days, havent seen him in years? How do you guys think Winky would do with sturm? Atleast its more of a name, there is probably a lot more money in it in Germany and if he looses it wont hurt his legacy as much and if he wins it will only add to it
Barker and Macklin were talking about meeting this Spring, then Macklin signed to fight Wright. So now Barker is looking elsewhere.
And I have plenty of boxing savvy, and of course I see why Macklin wants a name like Wright on his record, I just think, as a fan of boxing, that it is a shame that is the way it played out. Mackin already has a good ranking based on very little, so it would be better for him to put his cv in line with his self-opinion. But we agree on the reasons why he took this fight, so please don't suggest I speak through ignorance. We can disagree on detail without assuming the other is clueless!
