After recently watching some Michael moorer fights an interesting question came to mind on whether hes hof worthy or not. At first glance maybe not but throughout his career hes beaten some quality opponents and has some unique achievements. He was a talented fighter with good speed, boxing skills, huge power along with showing impressive heart when he needed to. He had a very good early run at light-heavyweight, capturing the then lightly regarded wbo belt and going undefeated at that weight with every win coming by knockout against mediocre opponents. When moving up to heavyweight he carried his great power with him and reeled off some good wins against the likes of Alex Stewart and Bert Cooper before having his career best victory over Evander Holyfield and capturing the wba and ibf titles. Even though he lost them in his next fight with George Foreman, it has to be noted he was giving a very good performance before the knockout. He managed to regroup from this loss and once again captured the ibf crown against Alex Schulz ( who most agree was robbed in his first title bid a year earlier against George Foreman ) in his opponents hometown. He would go on to make two defenses of that belt against the then the then undefeated Franscois Botha and Vaughan Bean. he lost the ibf belt in a rematch and unification with Holyfield. This was to be his last fight at world level and the final years of his career was to be marked by a loss by first round knockout to David tua, even though he did manage a win against the former cruiserweight champ Vassily Jirov. One of the notable achievements of his career was to be the first ever southpaw heavyweight champ. I actually would like to see him in the hall of fame when he is eligible as there has been worse fighters inducted and because his resume in review is actually very good. Do you think he is hof worthy or not?:good
I do not believe it would be wrong to put him in. There are fighters that should be in first but I wouldn't be opposed to it. I always thought he was an underrated fighter with an underrated career. Certainly no first-ballot man, but, yeah. It wouldn't be a bad choice, imo.
I'd say he's knocking on the door of the HOF, but don't know if he has enough to step through the doorway. He did compile a 35-0 record, which included titles in two weight classes, one of which was the lineal title, and that always counts for something.. His overall career record was fairly respectable with something like 50+ wins against only 4 defeats. I suppose other men who have entered the hall have done so with less, but for now I'll label him as a candidate.
Ingemar Johansson got in without sucessfully defending his belt once so I wouldn't be surprised if Moorer got in. Most lineal heavyweight champions get in there.
Moorer had the skill, speed and power to beat a lot of other champions. He's was a very good fighter who had an average chin. He should be in. If Johannson and McGuigan are in, Moorer should be in. He did more than them.
I like Michael but no way should he get in. Not if the HOF has credibility. As a person he is a nice man and had good skills, but he did nothing at 175 to get in, and at heavyweight. A good fight with Bert Cooper and winning the title but being stopped by Holyfield and losing to Foreman. What exactly gets him in the HOF? He does not have the resume and not even close. If 1-10 is a rating system with what should be 9-10 getting into the HOF, Moorer is about a 6.
Hasim Rahman should almost get in before Michael Moorer does. Better resume. What did Moorer do for real? I like him and I keep stating that because as a person Michael looks sensitive and like a nice person, but it is his boxing resume which lacks HOF pretige.
Fighters who have done less than Moorer have got into the hall. Hes probably no a first ballot hof'er but if you look deeper into his career he has some quality wins.
a ton of unworthy guys have gotten in, so why not? they'll let everyone with a winning record in eventually.
He's a yes for me. Two-divisional champion, was around for a long time, and won the Heavyweight title legitimately.
I always hear that stuff fighters who did less are in the hall. Maybe they shouldn't be in the hall of fame then. Moorer career is not worthy of Hall of Fame. He won the title at heavyweight and soon lost it. What is so great about his career. He lost to the two greats he fought. Tua and Foreman stopped him with one punch.
